“You guys carrying .45acp; are you not concerned that the 230 gr's will not over penetrate?”

Shouldn’t over-penetration be a concern no matter what ammo one is carrying? ;)

Winchester Ranger. If I'm not mistaken, 165gr JHP. Been awhile since I looked at the box and I don't usually carry a .40 anyway.

BTW, my regular carry gun is a .45ACP and I'm not concerned in the least it will overpenetrate. Then again, I'm using 230 gr Hydrashoks.

Ask 10 different people, get 10 different answers. I know this sounds cliche, but try a bunch of different brands and use what functions 100%, is controllable and accurate in your gun. The best wizz-bang JHP in the world won't do you any good if it doesn't function in your pistol or is too snappy to control.

I carry 124gr Speer Gold Dots, not the +P (as far as I know, they're not +P...could be wrong).

One of the great advantages of Gold Dots is that Speer also makes their FMJ "Lawman" brand, which has identical ballistics as the Gold Dots, so one can practice with the same recoil, ballistics, and so forth of the Gold Dots for a much more reasonable cost.

Any brand-name hollowpoint should perform well regardless of brand. Remington, Speer, Winchester, Federal, etc. should all perform well.

Heck, I've heard of WWB JHPs performing really well too. If you can shoot it frequently enough to become proficient (i.e. it's inexpensive) and you can put the lead on-target accurately, it doesn't really matter if you're using a WWB JHP or some uber-mega hollowpoint from some other company that costs 10x more.

regular old lead. its what we keep in all our house guns. the 9mm the 45 the 357. it expands like a mother, doesn't penetrate ridiculous amounts, and everyone here probably shoots it by the boat load anyway. im not worried about whats proven to kill 9 bad guys outta 10 so much as the gun will function, and i know i can hit what im shooting at with that round. im not a big fan of barn burners for defense, i feel a moderate load with most any bullet will suffice so long as it feeds reliably and goes bang everytime.

im surpised that no one rolls their own home loads, i know everyone says : "oh the legal repercusions!" but no one ever points out a time when that happened.

not trying to start an argument, merely throwing a couple pennies

9mm Winchester Ranger 127gr. +p+. .45 Winchester Ranger 230gr. +p. It doesn't get any better for handguns.

I like Federal "Hydra-Shok's" in most any caliber. :) When toting a
9m/m I use what once was known as "The Secret Service Load", issued
to all SS agents.

Now days, my primary carry piece is a .45 caliber weapon and for that
I load 'em up with 185 grain Winchester Silver-Tip JHP's. Doesn't matter
whether I'm carrying the SIG P220A or one of my 1911's from my stable.

I carry my own handloads, 125gr Gold Dots in the 357. Haven't settled on a load for the 45 yet, but I'm leaning toward 185gr either GD's or Golden Sabres.

I will use pretty much anything made by Speer, Federal, Winchester or Remington. That being said, if I have the choice, I prefer Speer Gold Dot ammo. I currently use the 135 grain .38 Special +P in my revolvers and the 124 grain 9mm in my semi-auto.

Winchester Ranger T in all my pistols...

147gr WRT in my 9mm's(G19, G17 and Beretta 8000 F).
180gr .40S&W in my Sig Sauer P229.
230gr +P in my HK USP45.

I carry a 38Super and Georgia Arms load G38SA. The specs are: 147gr Speer Gold Dot @ 1200fps on Starline brass.

I've never had a problem with Winchester White Box JHPs -- in my informal and unscientific tests, I've never had them refuse to perform. I also like the Remington 100-round JHP 'value pack' load. They're fairly stout.

That said, I still carry 124-grain Speer gold dots.

:uhoh: None, I just carry a gun around to scare people, but have it unloaded so I can't accidentially shoot anyone........

......seriously, Cor-Bon 90Gr. JHPs in my Kel Tec P3AT, and Federal Nyclad 158 Gr. SWCHP +Ps in my Smith 640. :D

My home defense gun is a Brigadier with a 20 rd mag of Federal 124 Gr. Expanding Point "FMJs" flat noses with a Streamlight M3. Wife's is a Smith M-66 with Federal 125 Gr. JHPs (.357s, of course!)
