Federal &/or IMI M855 SS109 62 Gr Green Tip in the Mini 14, BCM AR, and a Sig .223 Classic.

I was recently chastised by a buddy for not having the newer heavier stuff in them, but I figure so much more stuff is more important. I may however get some of the heavier stuff. Dunno.

I didn't know the .223 critical defense rounds had already been released...
I don't think they've gone public yet. My ffl guy received a case and passed them out. I hadn't even heard of these for the .223. That time of year I reckon. He does very little work for the general public but has had an "in" for as long as I've known him which is a few decades. He normally receives new stuff several weeks before the general release so I'd say perhaps Christmas time. He got this case the first few days of November.

Last week when I was searching for the 73gr I found one place on the internet that listed having the 55 in stock and another place which showed it had the 73gr. Everywhere else was either on back order or out of stock which I interpreted as they never had any in the first place. Found the 73gr site again (minutes ago) and now it has that "notify me when .....". I've been reading a bit tonight and can't figure out the big Hornady mystery regarding the .223 CD. There's enough quality defensive / offensive ammunition out there as it is. Been sick as heck of late. If I can catch my ffl guy I'll see if I an get to the bottom of it. He sells very little. World-class machinist.

Update. As stated they sent him that one case for eval. Funny because for whatever reasons he's one of those that receives products like ammunition, holsters, cleaning devices, etc for testing. I say funny because historically he has done very little retail sales, and has mostly built (from scratch) assorted firearms (mostly hunting rifles) and has been called upon at times to machine parts either no longer available or as a one-off test piece. Retiring a few years back, he had a super job of machining for the defense industry at a small highly classified shop and had/has his own very nicely equipped shop. Talked with him again this morning and he told me Hornady told him that if all went well and on schedule, the .223 stuff is slated to be available sometime during the first quarter of 2018. First quarter to me usually means mid-late summer.

Even though I'm just now getting on the upside from having a pretty bad case of pneumonia, he and I "tested" the rounds days ago. Redneck testing at it's best. From roadkill armadillos, opossums, and one raccoon to ragged, no longer worthy winter-coats draped over scarecrow looking creatures. They did ok for their intended purpose which is as an easily expanding / penetrating short-range round. Fired one magazine at a 100 meters. I reckon due to stabilization characteristics, they weren't at all accurate. My comparison rounds were my Wolf Gold which did great (100 meter accuracy comparison) as they always have for me. I believe there's enough true "self-defense" .223 /5.56 available such as the numerous hornady, barnes tsx, etc to question why hornady would appear to be positioning itself to compete against itself unless this means older products will be dropped. As long as the price remains at the postulated 20.00ish price I'm good with it. I guess those whose market consumer goods and we who seek them are always looking for that better mousetrap. Hope I never find it; it's all about the chase.
