brycewise posted a poll asking:
What ammo is is your defensive rifle mags

None Of The Above.

When you post a poll like this, you always need to add a choice that says "other" or "none of the above". When I use a rifle for self-defense purposes, it is a Mini-14 in 223/5.56 loaded with Hornady 60 grain Spire Hollow Points on top of 20.3 grains of IMR-4198.

Please note that this load is below the maximum listed in the Hornady Handbook #4, which was current at the time I loaded the ammunition. Later editions of the Hornady Handbook - along with other published reloading data now lists maximum loads that are below 20.3 grains.

I've got some 45gr and 52gr TNT rounds my dad loaded for his Mini-14. They work great in 1-12 barrels.

Winchester's 64 grain Razor Boar XT are in the first 6 magazines....(I bought a case of 200). Loaded for my BCM 14.5" carbine.

My outside AR is scoped, has forward light and loaded with 55 grain military ball. My house AR has holographic sight, front green laser and light with strobe. It is loaded with 55 grain frangible bullets so as not to over penetrate.

I have a box of Z-Max but I'd be hard pressed to put that in a magazine for defensive use.

The bullets themselves are great.

I guess both of these are technically pistols. 125gr Sierra pro hunters in 300 blk and 200gr Lswc in 460 Rowland @Just below 1400fps. The Rowland is a smith 1911 with crimson trace grips and a Millet red dot scope sighted at 50 yards. The crimson trace lights up a dark room good enough to distinguish friendlys from not easily. Other than the noise it’s a magnificent weapon out to 100 yards or so.

My AR was loaded for an EOTWAWKI scenario and then laid in the safe until present day, at which I’ve somewhere along the line come to the conclusion that it’s partially ridiculously unlikely scenario and partially not worth concerning myself with, even if it might become a reality.

Some mags have random FMJ like M855, some mags have soft points, some have target BTHP... sitting there for the day I might need to use it, or for my son to get old enough to ask for it, or whatever else.

My AR is locked in my main safe, along with 8 PMAGs loaded with M193 ball ammo in a vest. I keep handguns stashed around the house in other smaller safes for quick access, the rifle is more in case Russians or N. Korean's or Canadian's or even a mob of angry squirrels are marching towards my house.

You should probably unload them and forget about it. After all, what's the point? Right?

Given that the mags can basically remain loaded for my lifetime, without issue... I can leave it as-is and readily available, should that unlikely need arise.

Why would I go out of my way to create work for myself to make the rifle more difficult to use just because I don’t expect to actually need it?

I know there’s a *train like your life depends on it* mentality here, and that’s great if you’ve got the time and inclination to do so. But are you actually being made uncomfortable by my set it and forget it because actually living my life is more important than practicing to end someone else’s approach to firearms ownership?

For the moment, it's 62gr Nosler Varmint, as that's what the AR15A2 likes best.
The LE6922 is starting to show signs of "liking" the white box 45gr JHP. Plenty of 55gr ball to hand should a couple mags not suffice.

Being made uncomfortable? You flatter yourself.

I have one AR. It does double duty for HD and hunting. It’s not my primary HD weapon nor do I hunt with it often. Since it does double duty it has BUIS, a mini red dot and a 2-7 IR scope in QD mounts. I use the most accurate bullets I’ve found for it which are Winchester 64 grain PPs.

300gn nosler balistic tips and remington 405jsps........seriously.
I have other home defense weapons, primarily a 9mm Hi point carbine loaded with 147XTPs.
The Ars mags are loaded and stored with the ammo in my back safe, if im grabbing THAT gun, something went very, very wrong, and ive so far been very good or very lucky.

I have a few boxes of TSX. That's what's actually in my bump in the night AR and in the go-bag with four mags, bandages/tape, knife and flashlight next to it. That one guy across the street from that church in Sutherland Springs had to go get his rifle out of his safe, load up a mag and run out barefoot to shoot that guy. That's the type of situation I envisioned when I put all that together with that rifle, one where you just had what you had to work with right there and then.

Used TSX on both hogs and deer and it leaves an impressive hole. I mean 'Wow, look at that hole' kind of wound channel.

I have a whole bunch of other mags loaded up with soft points for one range down the street (they don't let you shoot FMJ there) and M-193 for the other range, but that's just blasting ammo. I'd use it in a pinch, though.
