What are people's thoughts on Hodgdon 's Varget Smokeless Powder?

Nyet, I have used Varget in 8mm with a 200 gr. Sierra bullet. While I'm limited on experience in the caliber, that combination was one of the more accurate rounds for me.

I don't remember off hand if I loaded any 7.62x54R with Varget.

I did buy 2 lbs. more to keep on hand. Much of Hodgdon's load data has Varget in the listing.

I may be wrong, but I wouldn't think you could use Varget in 44 mag.

I use Varget for .223 Rem (77gr SMK), 6.5x47 Lapua (140gr Berger), and .308 Win (150gr/165gr/168gr TTSX, 178gr A-MAX) and it's one of the good powders for .375 H&H but I use VihtaVuori N540 for that. It's a versatile and effective powder for sure and one of the reasons why I have 30lb of it ... maybe a little more. I've never had a problem working up accurate loads using Varget.

so its safe to say that I could pretty well use varget in at least most of my surplus guns with reasonable success? Does anyone have a good M2 Ball loading using varget?

I have tried Varget in a 30-06 and it didn't show any advantages for me. My impression was that it's performance was similar to IMR 4895 so if you like IMR 4895 in a 30-06 with 150 grain bullets you could possible like Varget. For a bolt action rifle in 30-06 with 150 grain bullets it didn't perform as well as either IMR 4064 or Reloader 17.

Varget is my second favorite rifle powder, right behind IMR4064. It edged out IMR 3031 when it shot well out of my .223 . I have yet to load it for .30-06, (mostly because I don't have a rifle in that caliber currently, despite having lots of brass...) but I have loaded it in .30-30, 7.62x39, 7.62x54R, and .223, and was happy with the accuracy.

I use Varget for the heavier bullets in .223, .243, 30-30, and 30-06. It works awesome. But I can't find the accuracy with the lighter projectiles though

I can never get as much Varget in a 223 case as data says. It is good powder however in many calibers, I like it almost as good as BLC2.

Hey guys, Sorry to resurrect this zombie thread, but just wanted to ask a question for the use of Varget. Is it truly usable for all large rifle loads? I'm looking for something that I can use universally in 30.06, 7.7 Jap, 8MM Mauser, .303 Brit, 762*54r, and 6.5 Carcano...maybe even 10.4*47 Italian Vetterli. But is Varget good for these adn other similar cartridges like 7.5 Swiss, 44 Rem Mag, and .308 NATO? Is there something better for my purposes? and is this good for 55 grain 5.56 reloads? I've heard its good for .223 Remington in 77 grain loads.

If you're sorry about resurrecting this thread why did you do it?

You know you can start a new thread?

It prevents people from replying to people who are no longer on the forum.

A new thread would have been better bringing back a 2 1/2 year old thread.

No powder is magic. You can not use a medium speed rifle powder in the 44 Magnum. In addition, if one powder could do cartridges ranging from the .223 to the .303 British there wouldn't be over 100 powders on the market.

Please buy a good load manual like the Lyman 50th Edition and actually read the front of the book. There us a wealth if knowledge in those pages and a section on powders. Good luck.
