I'm just wondering, what are the chances of the assault weapons ban actually expiring?

I'd love to see that happen, but are we just dreaming?

How do the waters feel to all of you?

The key will be making sure that it never gets out of committee or if it does, members of congress are re-introduced to the cold hard fact that last time they pulled this crap a lot of them didn’t make it back after the next election. Remember that it only passed by a very slim margin when the Democrats controlled things. Keep them out of power and our chances to let this abomination die is high.

There's been enough FUD that Bush may sign it IF it makes it to his desk the job will be to keep it from getting there.

Given that MOST Democrats realize that gun control is NOT a winning issue for them there won't be tons of support. Only the pathological grabbers like Fineswine keep beating the dead horse.

However the tin-foil hat part of me worries if there's a high profile incident in ’04 along the lines of the MD shootings or another whacko flips out at school or work that could be used to push something through.

Logic and facts be damned when a politician is trying to rework human tragedy into sound-bites for the 6 o’clock news to sell their socialist nanny-state agenda.

Geez… only 45 and I’ve got enough cynicism for 2 lifetimes already.

The Brady bunch seems to think it won't be re-enacted as they testified in an Illinois Senate Committee meeting today that one of the reasons Illinois needs to enact a state ban on so called "assault weapons" is because the federal ban will expire and not be re-enacted.

I certainly hope it fades away into the annals of history and goes no farther ...

however, we need to write and call our congressional reps and senators, as well as our president, and let them know we don't support a new ban.

btw, if you want to call the prez, here are instructions (from ar15.com):
They only ask your state. The number my buddy gave me is the main White House switchboard. (202) 456-1414 Tell them you want to leave a messge for your President. The thing will then say to press one. Then you will get a person, or if they are busy you can hold or leave a message, your choice.
they'll deliver the message if you call between 8am and 5pm EST

Only potential monkey wrench in the works is if a nut with an assault rifle gets national attention with a major act of lunacy.

I had a scary thought. Yes, someone will call me paranoid for this, but it wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last.

Several people have stated that one thing that could get the AWB renewed is another high profile case involving a scary black rifle. I would not put it past certain people (Feinswine et al) to ARRANGE for something like this to happen.

Devil's Advocate: "Just because we don't like them doesn't mean that they would go this far." (or something similar)

OK, these people knowingly and INTENTIONALLY want to put people at risk by taking away their means of self defense. It is NOT a very big stretch to imagine them sacrificing a few lives for what they FEEL is the "greater good."

Flame away.
