What are the deer hunting laws in your state?

In New Zealand, public land is sometimes different than private. We have seven species of deer, thar, chamois, wild goat and ram, boar/pigs, wild cattle, wild horses, wallaby and a mix of several small game as well. There are no seasons, you are encouraged to hunt year round. There are no limits and the Department of Conservation (DOC) would love you to shoot everything you see from the above list.

There are no calibre restrictions except that in public land under DOC control you are not allowed rimfire or shotgun because those are the choice of poachers shooting our native endangered birds. In DOC land spotlighting is not allowed but other areas are okay. You need a permit to shoot on DOC land but they are free and they like you to send in your kill return.

Even the best slug shotguns do not compare common centerfire rifles for range and effectiveness. We have slug and rifle zones in this state. I've killed many with each. A guy near me was banging away with semi auto slug gun and missed several deer within a 100 yards. Unfortunately that is fairly typical. I got mine at about 40 yards. Not that the best slug guns can't do better. Not many guys go to the expense and punishment of extending the range beyond 75-100 yards. The recoil of a 2100 fps slug hurts and 3 or 4 dollars per shot I gave up at 4 inch groups at 50 yards. 2-300 yard one shot kills are easy with my 7MM RM.
