what are the differences ?

Since you asked, and are already familiar with the Colt system, I say get the M1860 Colt (I have three, so I'm biased). :D

Get the Remington...and, later on sometime...get the Colt as well!

Of the two, I like the Remington a little more than the Colt, but either one is mighty nice, either one, a real pleasure to own and shoot.

I love the '51 I have now, but it has the brass frame so I want something I can get a larger charge into. is there a difference in max load botween the '58 and '60 ?

The remington has a top strap and tend to last longer. The brass colt reproductions wont last long at all. In everycase the steel pistols are better.

I would get the remington...

The Remington grip (I have one) is too small for my medium sized hand to shoot comfortably. The Colt grip fits me much better.

I second the larger grip of the '60. It sits in the paw nicely and points more naturally than the Rem. If the wedge is loose enough, it's just as easy to swap cylinders too. Before you order whatever you decide on, check out a few other places online to see what's out there. Dixie gun works has quite a selection. Cabelas is pricey unless they have a good sale going.

The Remington will hold a little more powder and will accept the 200gr LEE conicals well. The Remington grip size varies with the manufacturer whereas the 1860 Army colt is more consistantly longer and a better fit for big hands but is tough to load a conical ball. The Euroarms Remingtons have small grips that are not a lot bigger than the Colt Navy's and the Piettas (to me) seem heavier and clunkier with the largest grips. The Uberti is somewhere in between. I don't have beefy hands so I like the Colt Navy and the Euroarms Remingtons. If you have gristley(?) thick fingered "working man's" hands the Colt Army would be a likely better fit IMHO. Some shooters get their knuckles rapped by the Remington's trigger guard when firing.

There is no good answer to that question. It's like asking if one should wear briefs or boxers. Or neither.

Get the Remmie

The top strap and design make some differences. Since you have an 1851 the Remmie comes next. That way you will have them both. Caution.....They tend to attract others of their kind. The next thing you know it's Walkers, Dragoons, Patersons, Model 1849s, or 1862s. You might even get lucky and snag an original or two along the way.

It can get to be a habit.
:D

Funny how you recommend the Remmie for his next gun, but then suggest nothing but Colts after that. It's interesting how our true opinions seem to slip out, even when we're trying to be unbiased.

Colt, Colt, Colt, Colt, Colt, Colt.....my keyboard seems to have stuck...

As you can see we'll be a LOT of help in your quest for a new gun.

Thanks Gents, I will let you know how it goes but it seems that due to MI reg's I am going to miss out on the Cabela's sale. The '58 and '60 were the same price. DANG IT !!!!!!!!!

Cabelas is pricey unless they have a good sale going.

You're joking ..right?? Cabelas almost always has the best prices and I don't think I have ever seen them NOT have at least one model of BP gun on sale at any given time!!!!!!
Concerning the OP's question...I would buy the Remington since you already have a Colt but I don't understand what MI's regulations has to do with it. :what:

Remingtons a good shooter, but I'm so use to the Colt design that I find myself still carrying the Colt more(should have mentioned, I bought a Rem on sale from Cabelas three weeks ago).

I can clean my Colt faster and better, due to the fact the barrel comes completely off and I can just throw it into a pan of boiling water w soap.

I can also reload my Colt quicker, not change the cylinder, but reload. I think this comes mostly from the fact that my capper doesnt work on the Rem, and it seems to be a pain.

If I had multiple cylinders though, I could reload the Remington a little faster I suppose.

The other complaint I've got about the Remington, and it's going to vary from gun to gun, and everyones going to probablly have a different opinion. I bought this gun, because I asumed based on the design it would have to be night and day more accurate than the Colt. It may be, I havent put it on paper as of yet, but point of aim, the Colt wins hands down.

Either way you go, provided you get a well fit gun, once you get use to it, it'll serve you well. If I'd had a Rem from the start, I'm pretty sure that it'd be my favorite.

In black powder, I have five Remington types, two Spiller and Burrs [a Whitney/Remington/Beals type, but in brass frame] and only one open top Colt.Guess which one I like best?

With all those other guns, it's really surprising you like your Colt best! ;):neener:

It Can Become an Addiction

I'm not just stuck on Colts...I left out the part where he might just fall into a Ruger Old Army or two:)

The Colts and the Remmies become relegated to Safe Queen status (except for the odd range trip). The ROA is just one heck of a range gun.

I just added a Uberti Colt replica of an 1862 Police Revolver to my collection.

I was doing the time line evolution thing with my collection... from Mendi Spanish Pistols to the introduction of the Colt Paterson, followed by various additions in the line of Colts that followed. I added a remmie, then went to ROAs... not replicas but they have a modern history in regards to black powder shooting.

I'm on the wagon for the rest of the year regarding any future additions.

But the deal of the 1862 Police Revolver was just too good to pass up. :D

Hi guys. This looks like a good place for my first post on the forum. As a newcomer to the BP world, I agonized over the same decision for a couple of weeks. I did as much searching and researching as possible on the web before I made my decision.

Finally, I ordered an 1858 Remington (Pietta) New Army from Cabela's this past Monday night. I chose the model with case hardened frame and checkered grips.

Everything was fine for most of Tuesday. Then, I started having some nagging doubts about whether I had made the right choice or not. The doubt persisted throughout Wednesday; so I did the only logical thing to stop the doubts. I went back to the Cabela's website and ordered the Colt (Pietta) 1860.

Neither gun has arrived; so I can't answer the OP's questions yet. Hopefully, by the end of next week I will know which one I prefer.

I always liked the look of the Colt 51 Navy better than the Remington. That is, until I bought a pair of Remingtons from Cabelas on sale this year. Now I like the look of the Remington better. I definitely like the handling characteristics of the Remington better. And I love the way the Remington shoots.
I still like my Colt Navy but, to me, It can't hold a candle to my 58 Remingtons, or my favorite boomstick, the Pedersoli 20 gauge Howdah Pistol. The Howdah is just big, stupid fun. It's like having Mad Max's double without the class 2 expense, paperwork, and headache.

Well, I guess it is unanymous, as long as it eats BP it will satisfy my itch for another revolver. My astonishingly wonderful wife is taking me shopping tomorrow to hit some pawn shops in hopes of finding a good deal. Damn I love this woman !!!!!!!!

By no means am I an expert or knowledgeable enough to say this one or that one. I have the 1858 Rem and love it, very easy to remove the cylinder for quick change out. Top strap gives me more confidence and it looks good. 1851 Colt is just down right beautiful, I have 2 of these one in 36cal and the other is 44cal. Would take a month of Sundays to decide which of the Colts I like better. Now to the one that really stands out, 1847 WALKER. Not one negative about it at all and if I can convince the wife that I really really need a second one.
