Wisconsin is split. Much of the southern and eastern part of the state is shotgun, but rifles are allowed elsewhere. Technically, it's split into "Rifle" and then "Pretty much anything else" including shotguns, pistols and muzzleloaders.
When I hunt public land, I have tended to be in the boundry counties, where I can be shotgun-only in one spot and then be able to use a rifle a half mile down the road. Last season, I carried an 870 and a Marlin 336 in the truck... and checked my maps VERY CAREFULLY.
