Those M1's are about to be dunked in Cosmo before being placed in the sealed long-term storage drums.

Here's the answer. In the first post "Sea Of Garands" we see the M1 Garands being checked and then greasing the rifles by hand. In this photo we see the NEW Conveyor belt showing final inspection line where the Conveyor is loaded for greasing. This new system is faster then doing it by hand.
Most of you had it correct. However, this was for new issue M1 Garands. These files are dated 1944.
