What are your thoughts on ear protection while hunting

Peltor Tac-6, if my memory serves. Not only do they protect my ears from the gunshot, I can actually hear better with them than I can without.

With modern electronic muffs, there's just no reason not to wear protection.

it's amazing on how many excuses you can get to argue this point. If we can save up for a firearm or ammo, we should save up for good protection.

Range commands can be heard, bambi can heard, miss piggy can be heard. The only downside I see is the wife can still be heard.

I think if you hunt with a muzzle brake it is almost mandatory, IMHO. I have been around plenty of belt fed guns and nothing even comes close to the ear pain of standing right next to my little brother when he droped a big mule deer while we were riding into our elk camp. 338-378 weatherby. Bad times. I didn't hear out of my left ear for five days wich really sucks when you are elk hunting. Little bro wears plugs on a string around his neck now and tries to use them when ever he can.
I have tinitus and high freq hearing loss alrieady so I try to protect what I have left, I am only 31 so I don't want to end up like my dad who can't hear his cell phone ring in his shirt pocket even with hearing aids. He used to shoot small bore comp in high school and said no one wore plugs back then, I guess now we all know better.

I have hearing loss in my left ear due to gunfire, and working around industrial air compressors and steam turbine driven equipement in my younger days.

Years ago my audiologist suggested that I purchase a Walkers Game Ear and wear it, not for the amplification and hearing aid function, but to allow me to still hear while providing ear protection from gunshots.

The unit functions fine with respect to instant clamping of gunshots. However, it can at times make it difficult to locate the source of some sounds in the woods if you do not get the volume balance just right. On windy days it really hinders sound location, but still provides hearing protectioin.

It is a compromise solution that protects hearing, but can create some problems with sound source location. Anyway, it beats no protection at all and I'm not using it for sound amplification capability.
