Has to be CA legal, and no ARs with fixed magazines (I don't understand the advantage of a fixed magazine for an autoloader)

I can think of the following:

Ruger Mini 14/30 (have a Mini-14, not too fond of the accuracy)

Remington 7400 (no slide hold open I hear, thus not acceptable)

Browning BAR (looks nice, don't know anything about it)

Springfield M1A (would be an easy choice if not so pricey)

I'd prefer a rifle chambering, such as .223, .243, or .308 (my goal is to standardize to only these chamberings).

What other models am I missing? Which are good choices for 100 yard target shooting, and having around for a SHTF scenario?

This is a much-chewed topic. We love talking about exactly this kind of thing (although you will have few offerings in .243). Try a search of SHTF in the rifle forums here and at TFL.

For starters: SKS, SU16, Saiga, Garand, M1A, BAR, Mini 14/30, neutered ARs.

Volquartsen Evolution, M1 Carbine, Ruger Deerfield 99/44, Stripper Clip fed FAL

roscoe,

Saiga isn't legal, it's listed.

pcf,

bayonets are cali legal.

I believe that older Saigas are listed, but not EAA or the newest imports, as they must be according to the law. You can doublecheck at calguns, and here, but I believe that this is the consensus.

I agree fixed-mag AR's are gay.. For now, the SKS fills my semi-auto needs. It's super cheap, reliable, fairly accurate, and can be loaded quickly with stipper clips. I'm gonna get a M1A one of these days. It's pricey, but it's the best thing we've got there. I think Mini-14's are overpriced and dont care to support Ruger anyway. I was considering a SU-16 for awhile, but I've heard they have a number of problems. If there's anything I hate, it's an unreliable firearm.

Why not just build it without a pistol grip and flash suppressor, and then have your detachable magazine?

Short of that, here is a list of Cali legal autoloaders that I can think of. I am sure there are more and many of the ones below might not fit your criteria, but some you might want to look at.

Mini-14/30
SU-16 A,B,CA
Beretta RX4 (If it is made available to civilian sales)
Ruger PC9/40
Ruger Deerfield
Marlan Camp 9/45
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
M1A
M1941 Johnson
SKS
Volquartsen Evolution
Modified FAL
Rasheed
Hakim
FN49
VZ-52/57
SVT
MAS49
Ljungman
BAR
Benelli R1
Remington 7400
1919
Vickers
M-31 Suomi
PPSH-41(This one and the Suomi might not be long enough for California if you get the versions from Military Gun Supply)

Oh yeah, the HK SL6 or SL7, if you got the dough. Beautiful rifles.

An AR without a pistol grip is a neutered AR, IMO. I'd rather just have an M1A than to build an AR without a pistol grip. YMMV

M1 Carbine...

Who makes the best (or one of the best) M1 carbines?

Looks like a nice handy medium range rifle?

Anyone offer it with synethic stock?
