When I worked as an appliance repairman, my "territory" included Ponotoc, in fact close to half my family still live in the surounding area (heck i could be distant kin of Mrs hester, since all they gave was a name). based on the few details given i'd say that Mrs Hester probably still lives on the same piece of land that her, her husband, and their children farmed most of their lives. and if i'm right about that, i'd be shocked if there was NOT a shotgun, and ammunition, within reasonable reach of a person living in that house.
