What can you tell me about my double?

I have a 12 gauge double made by Ugartechea made in Spain. It has 28 inch barrels. The wood is nice the blueing has some scratching. How much are these guns worth?. Would it be cost effective to have the barrels chopped to 20 inches and make it into a coach gun?

Looks like you have a very fine shotgun there, comparable to Parker shotguns. Go to this site to try to find out about your gun. Don't cut the barrels to make a coach gun.

There's an article entitled the "Best of the Best" from Spain, by Jerry Wieland, in the September, 2003 American Rifleman, p. 74. It's about doubles from seven Spanish manufacturers, including Ignacio Ugartechea. He mentions (p. 123) two Ugartechea guns as "perhaps the best buy in Spain." He continues, "[f]or years, Ugartechea's prices did not change, and to look at the [price] list, you would think that there was a zero missing."

Cutting the barrels would probably be a major financial (and aesthetic) mistake.

If the finish only has a few scratches I'd try to rub them out by hand unless they are deep. Usually refinishing a gun hurts its value rather than helping it.

Ugartechea makes a wide variety of guns from boxlocks right up to fine sidelock game guns. I've had the pleasure of touring the factory 4 years ago and they are one of the better Spanish makes, on par with AyA at least.

I wouldn't cut the barrels to make a coach gun. It was meant to chase upland birds and for the price there are few guns better for the job.

The article in American Rifleman was by Terry Wieland. He has written a book entitled, "Spanish Best" and is the preeminent authority on Spanish guns.

Refinish might make it look prettier but likely would cut the value a bunch.
If an extremely good refinish, might only knock it down a third or so.
If a so so refinish, could reduce the resale value by 75% or more.
