What Can You Tell Me About the 586-4?

I just picked up a S&W 586-4.

Revo is in great shape. Very tight. Obviously very few rounds down range. No muzzle wear. Unfortunately it was a gun only sale, no box or papers and the original grips are long gone.

Can someone school me on the -4? I'm not all that up on the "dash" stuff.

Manufactured 1993-1997. Main differences to early models are synthetic grips, top strap drilled and tapped for mounts. Midway through the run the square butt variant was deleted.

The dash stuff is a change history or Revision history. In the case of the S&W Model 586:

586-1, 1986 Radius stud package, floating hand.
586-2, 1987 Change hammer nose and associated parts.
586-M, 1987 Product warning by S&W, M overstamp to indicate factory mod (for 586 and 586-1)
586-3, 1988 New yoke retention system. 1992 Delete 8 3/8" barrel and four-position front site. 1992 Delete nickel finish
586-4 1994 Drill and tap, synthetic grips, change rear sight and extractor. 1995 Delete square butt. 1997 Delete 8 3/8" barrel, change to MIM thumb piece.
586-5, 1998 Change design to eliminate cylider stop stud. Change to MIM hammer with floating firing pin, change to MIM trigger, change internal lockworks.
586-7, 2006 Limited Edition. 7-shot variant only.
586-8, 2012 Reintroduced under Smith & Wesson's Classic lineup. 6-shot only.

The Model 586 is about the same gun as the Model 686 but the 686 being stainless and the 586 being blued steel. Mine is a 586 no dash and I believe around maybe 1985 manufacture with the inside of the grips stamped Nov 1985. Mine is a 6" barrel.
Actually the 586 guns are relatively new making the original grips easier to find. Overall as how the revolver stacks up against some of my others? I see it as one of my more enjoyable shooters, actually I enjoy shooting it as much as my Model 19.

Love my -8! But I'd been wanting a 6" 586 for so long I didn't care about what "-" it was, or the Hillary lock. When I found this one BNIB and unfired on sale as "used" for $599 because the buyer had ordered the wrong thing and traded it back in, I happily sold all my silver to snatch it up.

It's funny. This was on a FB group and one guy bit ahead of me then flaked. I think it's because the pics the guy posted were awful. I took a shot (the guy is a bit of a d-bag as well) and came out pleasantly surprised. I'm hoping to get it to the range in the next couple of weeks. No rush. I am currently more interested in rifle/distance shooting right now and I have plenty of other projects to keep me busy.

You did really good! I saw the French actor, Sidney Poitier, carrying one in "Continental Divide", and I was in love! Mine is a no dash. The first thing I did was remove the S&W grips. It seems all their target grips are 'way too large to be really comfortable in my hands. I traded a pawnshop owner for a set of Herrett's Shooting Stars, also a bit large, which I corrected by rasping, sanding, and refinishing. I did shoot better with them. Then the Siren Song of "more pretty" sounded its tune, and I bought a beautiful pair of Cocobolo grips in a Herrett's box. Not sure if they were, but they were also a bit large. Sand and refinish...not much difference. Then I bought a pair of Hogue black rubber(?) grips. Fit like a glove, and I can shoot better with them, but...they are ...uhmmm...NOT pretty! The urge for something to prettify my gun has struck again, so, I called Hogue to ask if their wood grips were about the same dimensions as the black ones. The young lady said yes, so...I'm saving my pennies!

I will be looking for a set of wood grips to "prettify" my revo shortly. However I'm currently obsessed with rifles and have a build in the works so I won't be in any kind of rush.
