Now that I have the revolvers from Cabelas I would like to know what caps to use. Also Pietta advises a .451 rb while another source says to use .454. I will be using 777 3f.
What cap for Pietta 1858

My experience with Pietta revolvers is use #10 caps. I have found that the cylinders will only use the 451 balls when they are new, they tend to open up a bit and then the balls slide forward on recoil. If you are having to purchase round balls get the 454s. Most of the shooters packs have 451s.

I wonder if no CCI no 10 will work too as I don't have many Remington 10's.

Just try it. As long as the caps stay on without having to pinch them, and as long as they reliably fire, then you should be good to go. Don't even have to go to the range - just put the caps on the nipples and fire 'em off in the back yard with no powder or balls.
If anyone complains, just tell 'em you're playing with a cap pistol.
I have a Pietta 1851 Navy that I bought a month or so ago, and just today I shot it for the first time. My other revolvers are set up with Treso nipples that take Remington 10's, but the Navy still has the factory nipples. I tried it with CCI 10's and they worked just fine.

The factory nipples are as close a fit to a CCI #10 as anything else. Aftermarket nipples generally fit CCI and Remington #11s. Remington #10s are actually the same width as #11s more or less, they're just a different length, and those usually work on aftermarket nipples as well. There's a table that gets posted periodically if you want to know the exact dimensions.
Either .451 or .454 will work. Most people prefer .454s since they give a little more insurance that the cylinder will be totally filled and usually give somewhat better contact with the rifling since there's a larger flattened area.

351 Winchester, yes the CCI #10 are fine. On my guns with stock nipples Remington and CCI # 10 work fine. Some will swear that one brand or the other is better, I have no preference both work fine for me.

The CCI #10 is tight on my Pietta 1851 factory nipples, Remington #10 is fine. I haven't tried #11 by CCI or Remington but suspect they would fit well. IIRC, the last three have diameters around .066-.068" while the CCI#10 is smaller at .060".
I had to force the CCI #10s on to allow the cylinder to rotate, the caps were too high and caught on the frame so I won't buy any more. No doubt there is enough variation that what works for one may not work for someone else.

Thats the same thing i found, not just any 10 will work. I tried the CCI #11 and they are loose because they arnt deep enough. So far the best luck ive had on all my guns are #10 remingtons only.
I havnt changed any of the nipples they are all stock nipples for the gun and #10 remingtons fit the best.
I just got a CVA 1860 and the #10 remingtons were a bit tight but intsted of changing the caps for that one gun i just chucked the nipple into my drill and sanded the nipple till they fit better.
Till i can afford to replace all my guns with a $30. nipple set remington #10s is what fit.
