What Choke Do Most Use for Trap?

Depends on the load and the gun. I have some loads that pattern like a trap full with a modified tube in the gun, and some with a full choke that pattern like a normal modified. Switch guns and the same might be true or it might not.

I don't believe the markings on the choke tubes, or the markings on the barrel if it is a fixed choke. Too many times it has fooled me on the pattern board. I pattern EVERYTHING, it really is the only way to know what is actually going to happen.

I prefer to shoot 22 yards or less with one ounce of 8's loaded to about 1150 fps with Clays and a modified choke in my SuperX2, a full in my Red Label Sporting, or a trap full in my 1100 choke barrel, If my 1100 is wearing the fixed full barrel I bump the velocity up to about 1250 to get similar patterns. If shooting a 20 guage I like 7/8 ounce of 8's at about 1100 with a full choke in my Gold 20.

I shoot a full choke in a long barrelled Rem. 1100. It doesn't matter what handicap I have, because the barrel doesn't have interchangable chokes (gun was made in '56). I found that shooting from the 16 with full choke make a handicap quite easier to deal with :)

I use improved modified for everything (16 yard singles and 25.5 yard handicap) and just change the load. 1 oz #8.5 @ 1180 for 16 yards, 1 oz #7.5 at 1180 for handicap.

+1 for patterning every load from every gun. My BT-99 shoots tighter with 1 oz loads than it does with 1 1/8 oz.....my Superposed is tight with both.

I only use full....keeps me honest on my form and technique. I'm pretty consistent around 20 clays per round. My best has been 23 and there is still the occasional 16 or 17.

This time of year, I can use a more open choke for the same results I'd get in warmer times. I shot 23/25 yesterday as a warmup with a Light Modified (14 POC) and the hits were far from chippy.

The TB has 25 POC in it now, combined with a long cone it's a bit too tight for MY loads at this time of year. I use it to keep me ON the birds, tight chokes are good teachers.

I suggest using the choke that gives you smoke on maybe half of the solid hits with your loads and gun of choice.

It's useless to consider choke without considering the load, they are as intertwined as Yin and Yang....

I've moved to shooting almost all kinds of trap with 1oz of #7.5 moving a shade over 1200fps. For trap, even from the 16 yard line, I shoot Full. I've tried it with a more open choke and I never seem to do as well. A couple weeks ago, I shot a few rounds using a Modified choke, and ended up with one of the lowest scores I've had in a long time, and my best round was 23. Frustrated with that performance, I swapped back to Full for this week, and ran 49/50.

For me, I think it's a confidence thing. If I see the clays disintegrating into atomic particle-sized pieces, then I feel good about my shooting and continue to shoot well. If I see enough hits that leave chunks flying around, then I start wondering if I'm in the fringe of the pattern... which causes me to make adjustments and start missing.

That being said... I worked my way from Modified patterns up to Full over a period of months when I was starting out.

I shoot Mod at 16-20yds and smoke 'em with Rem Game loads 7 1/2's or crush them with 8's. Shot my first 25 in recent history last night, too! Thought I was on my way to 50 straight but missed #43 and 44 :(

Hey Ed...If you can run 42 , you can run 100 . It's mental now . One night soon , when you least expect it ;) , you'll just be in the zone . When I was right there , where you are now , an All American Trap Shooter told me to keep my head down and follow the biggest piece of the broken bird after it broke . That REALLY helped . If you get the chance , Kay Ohye's clinics are EXCELLENT.

I don't think you want to shoot any "Game Loads" if you are serious about scores, especially at handicap ranges. The shot is soft and produces patchy patterns in addition to being technically illegal in Trap due to dram equivalent. Read Bob Bristers "Shotgunning, The Art And The Science" to learn about tight patterns. Good Luck...Tom

Not really a trap shooter, that said, some bbls / chokes were Marked Modified some Full. Since I don't pay a whole lot of attention to Markings I shoot a pattern board at the distance I want to break the bird.

I dunno, Just because I can read writing don't mean it is not easier to read dots on a pc of paper...I don't mis-read anything that way. :uhoh:

Lazy perhaps *shrug*

Probably more because I do things different than a lot of folks... :D

Then again I do know a IC will break Trap birds...didn't say the loads I used were bought at the clubhouse tho' :uhoh: ;)

My old M12 trap gun has a mod fixed barrel. It is a little tight, almost an improved-mod. It smokes targets at the 16 and does a good job on crushing targets back to 35 yards when we shoot trap games. I generally shoot 1oz loads from 16 to 25 yards and go with handicap Premier STS's back to the fence.

Tom, thanks for the tip (I really like simple tips like that...usually makes a big difference!)

I thought the Rem Game loads were ok... 1oz.@1290fps ??? I also shoot skeet with the 8's...I buy them (cheap $2.98 at Walmart) because I support mine AND my son's shooting habit. I'm looking for a job...for him :)
