Decided it's time to outfit my rifles with Magpul furniture and since they have color options, I'm wondering what to go with. Black is what I mostly have, but I'm thinking it's time to add some color. FDE is pretty standard now, but I live far from a desert environment. Is FDE still a good color to choose for woods or grassy fields?

Obviously OD green would be better, but that's not always available at a price I'm willing to pay.

Or is there another color I should look at getting?

Yes, FDE (et al) is just brown and the woods, and fields, are more brown than green most of the time. See the camo everyone is adopting, and it's largely browns.

I also love me some OD Green, but the browns look good and work well, and everything comes in one shade of it or another so easier to "match" stuff up as well.

I assume those who are holding their tongues want to say getting an AR in any color other than black is stupid. If that's what you think and suggest all black, say so. I'm looking for input.

There is a couple that shoot together at our range and have been competing in a rifle Winter league. They are both shooting Custom bench guns in 6 Creedmore. His is Cerakote Red/White/Blue flag. Hers is Cerakote Wonder Woman Aluminum chassis and they both look terrific..

So who says it has to be black or wood?

Its just MagPul plastic, not Grade AAA Circassian Walnut, just Krylon it.

Buy some real sea sponge and your favorite subdued colors to paint it with if you want get fancy.

@CraigC put together a real nice looking gray AR I liked the look of.

If you feel the need for camo or to match your environment better than black, I'd either rattle can it or have it cerakoted professionally.

My favorite AR color pattern for many years - ever since DPMS came out with the Arctic Panther - has been white and black. Never have cared whether it blended in or not, it’s really the only AR aesthetic I really think looks great. I have two AR’s dressed in FDE and black, my wife’s 5.56 is Multicam dipped two-tone against FDE. Most of my others are black, and I hate the look. I did one in tungsten cerakote and black two tone, which did look great, but still just a twist on black.

I do have a DPMS carbine in my shop right now for some work, factory two tone ODG with their slick side upper - I’ve been finding it quite fetching. Although, FDE matches more often in the environment I hunt.

I guess that I’m silly, but I colorcode mine based on chambering; 556NATO/223 AR15s are black while 300AAC are grey and 450 Bushmaster is OD. The LFAR in 22-250 are FDE while LFAR in 257 Roberts are OD and LFAR in 308 are grey/blue, and the LFAR in 358 Win is black. I carry this over to the bolt guns, which use the same color codes (adding orange for 25-06 and red for 257 Weatherby Mag and so forth).

I usually buy the Pmag sand-color magazine baseplates and color code those as well, using RIT plastic dyes.

In Magpul I've got:

Black
FDE
Gray

I've used all three colors for hunting (coyotes) and haven't seen an advantage for any color. I think my next one may be OD just for the heck of it. Pmags I have a a lot that are all black.

I have one in realtree camo furniture, two in black, and one in raw alum/black/wood. One of the black ones is gonna get a custom duracoat job done eventually.

Here on the wooded prairie, brown is the best color for camouflage. Brown, tan, gray, and sage are the best mix, in that order.

My problem is that I like them all. I've got a Springfield Saint that is all green. Now two with FDE or coyote brown furniture.

FDE:

I actually like the coyote brown better but it's proving less popular.

I've got three with gray furniture. The 6.5 has a tungsten cerakote upper and a wolf grey Primary Arms 1-6x.

This one now has a grey UBR stock.

I just wished Magpul made AR15 parts in their "plum" color like the AK Magpul furniture gets.

I like OD Green personally, but FDE is nice to add to black receivers.

I'm not a fan of the grey.

I came real close to ordering my PSA AK with the plum furniture. Got OD instead.

My main complaint with all black is, not all blacks are the same. In fact, it seems everyone has a different black. Combine off-black with another off-black and a black receiver, and you have a mess, IMO. I do work with paint colors all day so I might be a bit jaded though

Of course FDE and ODG are the same way, but they arent black like the receiver and maybe barrel. So as long as the furniture is all the same brand, any color is fine.

I ordered a thumbhole-delete for my AICS chassis and it didnt match, so the whole thing got camouflaged.

Pick the color that makes you happiest--you are the one who then has to decide if you want to swap it for a different color later.

I know of one in Tonka-toy yellow, and it makes the owner smile every time they pick it up.
I also know of one in burnt orange, but it's covered in ugly mutant cows and persistently hooks to the left when fired.
I'm passing partial to burgundy [:)]
