Marty Robbins made a song called Mr. Shorty. From the song here's what I know about his gun:
I'm sure it's .44 cal, but does anyone know enough history to guess any manufacurer or anything?
"His hand was already positioned
Feet wide apart on the floor
I hadn't noticed but there on his hip
Was a short-barreled Bad Forty-Four."
---Some lyrics say Bass Forty-Four

"But the little man's hands was like lightning
The Bass Forty-Four was the same
The Forty-Four spoke and it sent lead and smoke
And seventeen inches of flame."

The song's also set in a cowboy-era type setting.

What do you think?

Undoubtedly a Smith & Weson No. 3 New Model Russian with a 4" barrel. Mr. Shorty would appreciate the smaller round butt stocks and no loss of automatic ejection even with the short barrel.

I'm not certain what Mr. Shorty carried but I know Leroy Brown carried.............."a 32 gun in his pocket for fun".

BAD, BAD LEROY BROWN
Jim Croce

"Well the South side of Chicago
Is the baddest part of town
And if you go down there
You better just beware
Of a man named Leroy Brown

Now Leroy more than trouble
You see he stand 'bout six foot four
All the downtown ladies call him Treetop Lover
All the men just call him Sir

Chorus:

And it's bad, bad Leroy Brown
The baddest man in the whole damned town
Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

Now Leroy he a gambler
And he like his fancy clothes
And he like to wave his diamond rings
In front of everybody's nose
He got a custom Continental
He got an Eldorado too
He got a 32 gun in his pocket for fun
He got a razor in his shoe

(Repeat Chorus)

Now Friday 'bout a week ago
Leroy shootin' dice
And at the edge of the bar
Sat a girl named Doris
And oo that girl looked nice
Well he cast his eyes upon her
And the trouble soon began
Cause Leroy Brown learned a lesson
Bout messin' with the wife of a jealous man

(Repeat Chorus)

Well the two men took to fighting
And when they pulled them off the floor
Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle
With a couple of pieces gone "

......apparently Mr. Brown's presentation skills need some work....and lets hope he learned his lesson and "stepped up" to least a .38 Special after the incident. :)

- Regards

I always thought of a 44-40 "Sheriff's Model".

Highly unlikely. Mr. Shorty would be much too wise to ues a crude, sawed-off Colt Single Action with no ejector assembly. It takes far too long to eject the fired shells and reload. Now with the Smith & Wesson you simply break it open and the empties are gone. Also, if you were so inclined the barrel could be shortened to about 2 1/2". :D
