What do they really do during the 7-day wait periods?

All the waiting period does is make violent criminals use their existing guns instead of the new gun.

"They" basically twiddle their thumbs for 7 days.

"They" basically twiddle their thumbs for 7 days.

The wait for a background check was never to provide time for the check,,,
It was simply another road bump in the way of purchasing a firearm.

The "cooling off period" was just backdoor gun control,,,
Very similar to the one gun a month laws.

The "justification" for them is a scam,,,
It's feel good legislation for the anti-gun crowd to crow about.

Like 99% of gun laws, waiting periods serve no legitimate purpose. They are designed to frustrate and inconvenience gun owners so we give up trying to own guns.

Waiting periods require multiple trips, time, and extra costs. And, since brick and mortar gun dealers are being slowly driven out of business and laws preventing them being XYZ number of feet from schools or churches, special zoning, etc... some folks need to travel a distance to get to a gun shop.

Not only are there no legitimate purposes, they are counter productive. People may want a gun today because of a specific threat they want to defend against. For instance, a woman may be harassed or threatened and feel the need to get a gun and immediately learn how to use it. A week wait (or longer, depending on her schedule) may be too late.

As said it is to make it a PITA for buyers. The intent was to make it harder for first time buyers to buy a gun.

Example? Guy decides he wants to buy a handgun. Looks online, goes into gun store he is by. They have range, he tries it, makes offer, accepted. BUT he has to get a "purchase permit" in many states. THEN go thru waiting period.

So he has to go back to that store over a week later. So he says "heck with it"

I have seen folks want to buy gun, when told PITA to do it....

My FFL was 50 miles away. IF my NICS had been delayed for any reason I would have had to make another trip. He was NOT allowed to run NICS before I made trip....

Leadcouncil said it better.... I just read first post then hit reply.

hmmm...was not being able to run a NICS check without you present a state law, or just a way for the LGS to make sure you come back?

Reason I ask is once, and only once, did the NICS come back as "needing further investigation" or something like that. I left and they ran it again and it was clear.

He was told by ATF that buyer MUST be present when call is made. He ofen visited his MIL less then 8 miles from me. He could NOT bring gun and call from my place. Seems his business, other venue where business is being conducted. (gun shows, other events) but not private residences.

I was spoiled how cheap he did transfers...

As noted, more than just a few states have wait periods. It's now at least 5 or more, which is at least 10% of states, or more.

WA has a handgun wait period of 5 days (may have just gone up to 10 days) :banghead: unless a person has a CPL.

The wait period seems unconstitutional. If you pass the check you should immediately get the gun. What's the valid reason of the wait? There just is none.

Both the check and the wait are clear (IMO) prior restraints on exercising rights and unconstitutional.
