Coming from Sou th Ko rea where CCW is only given to selected few me beinig one of those whose life is less important, these are what I carry.

Fortunately though, everything else is avail for self-defense.
Thank God for that because I heard there are countries where they are all illegal.
(Taser and CS are illegal, but I wouldn't carry them even if it were legal)

This is absolute minimal carry (I.E. when on nightout)

1) A keychain OC spray with a spare cartridge.
2) Gerber Covert folder(or a cheap folder) and ZT shroud cutter
3) Cheap keychain LED

Additional items for general carry

4) ASP 26" baton (When I do, I leave 2~3" of handle exposed on a sidebag for immediate access in code yellow)
5) Gerber multi tool (Not pictured)
6) Surefire G3 with 200 lumens bulb.

The ZT 0121 knife is purely for aesthetics, I never carry them.

Altoids is for... .mints :D

Very rare. There are a lot of fights in nightout venue, but those are caused by silly disputes, but none are 'pre-meditated'.

But of course, no one is free from it. I've never felt myself in danger other than stray dogs. No, I didn't eat them :D

I carry nothing for self defence, bacause live in Finland. No need to carry.

Ah, Finland. the sole country in the world where there's no violent crime or murder. And pigs fly.

I used to cary a folding knife in countries that I thought it was ok legally. I used a hatchet and a baseball bat for home defense in Italy, area I was in was quite violent crime free though.

I looked in to getting a black powder gun as I heard it was not regulated but I never got around to it and I wasn't sure if not being an Italian citizen would matter or not with the black powder.

I figure if you are in a foreign land and needed a weapon a decent kitchen knife stuck in to a piece of cardboard in a sheath and maybe carried with some stuff you got while shopping might do and be somewhat explainable.

I grew up in a family that travelled the world, usually staying less than 1 week in any 1 spot.

After I got to be about 10, I got into the habit of going into hardware stores and picking up a cheap clasp knife - usually cost between $2 - $5. Very sterile, very easy to conceal, very easy to deploy, and I was never bothered about discarding them for any reason.

Other than "everyday" useage, I used a knife for SD three times. Twice (13 & 15) the mere display was enough to defuse the situation (street children about equal in age) and allow me to walk away unmolested. Once (16) there was a tussle with a lone adult which ended with someone besides me getting a nasty slice across the back of the hand, ending the affray. The knife sank to the bottom of a canal several blocks from where the tussle took place, and my family left for another destination the next evening without ever knowing about the incident.

I did not then, and do not now believe that knives are the "best" answer to the question of how to protect yourself. They are better than nothing.

Now that I'm a certified "old fart" I use a cane, walking stick, or umbrella as my first line of defense when I am in foreign lands. I still have a knife available, but prefer to keep as much distance as possible between me and who/whatever. When on home soil I add smokeless powder to the mix.

stay safe.

the closest I get is carrying a surefire 6p with 120 lumen bulb,
in the car I have a 3D cell maglite and a golf umbrella (ever been jabbed with a golf umbrella?? it hurts!)

but to be honest I think I would probably get into trouble for using any of them.
the only time I have felt the need to use 'self defense' techniques was at night in town taking some pictures, drunken idiots start hassling me, amazing how much light gets output by a off camera flash set to max!!
