What do you consider a good group size

94045 what is the distance with the 2" exercise you were shooting sounds like fun thing to do . Is there a same type exercise for rifles if so what distance used ?

One thing that I try to do and try is the key word there , when shooting load one round at a time into the rifle that seems to help me not rush the shot as much . Even then there are times when I pull the trigger before looking at the target I know it was not were I was trying to aim or just can the movement of the barrel when firing . There is a reason I drove a truck most of my life and not a sniper .

The best I've ever done out of my .45 Shield (My usual Carry Gun) at 7 yards is 20 rounds into 2.75" in 30 seconds including 2 Magazine Changes. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell me that's what I should do at 25 yards.
No but at same distance point shooting without use of sights. :D

It was 7 yards. I have not heard of a rifle excercise (admittedly I'm not much of a defensive rifle guy). However let's assume that you can slowfire offhand groups with an AR with peep or red-dot at 50 yards around 2". If so I don't see why you couldn't do it at 25 yards. If that's to difficult at your skill level move it back to 15 yards. The idea is to teach you to make fast but accurate shots (the double the negative points for a miss makes them painful. When you account for the missed opportunity it's actually a 3x swing) and keeping the loading in the equation makes speed of reloads an important part of the equation. They limited the Hi-Cap guys to 10 rounds per mag at the class I was in. That likely would be a good idea with rifles as well.

PS The guys who sights didn't hit EXACTLY to the point of aim at that range with that ammo had fits trying to add KY Windage to the mix.

Offhand, I want to keep it on the 6" steel 10 out of 10. Right now I'm working on 35 yards with a handgun, and 75 yards with a rifle, .22 both. I want to be at 40 and 100. My eyes betrayed me, and open sights are no longer an option. Let my limited handgun skills get quite rusty. A Ruger 22/45 with a Fastfire has gotten me back out there again. Might have to figure out some optics for a revolver or two if this keeps up.

Every variable factors into it: Position, rifle, ammo, optic, how the shooter is feeling, applications of the fundamentals, etc.

My specific current pursuance is open sights, off hand at 50 yards. I generally shoot groups off sand bags with whatever combo of ammo and gun I have that day, then stand and try to reproduce those rested group measurements. Most days its with a Remington 521T, Lyman rear peep sight. Rested it will shoot 1", sometimes smaller groups. Standing I can shoot 3", sometimes smaller, groups. I'm calling 3" a good group size.
