What do you do with all your “random” ammo?

Over the years, I’ve loaded ammo for all kinds of different caliber. I have them all in fancy little MGM plastic ammo boxes. But I’ve ended up selling the rifles and now I have boxes of ammo in calibers that I don’t even have guns in anymore. What do you all do with your ammo that you don’t have guns for? I’m trying to consolidate my calibers and I’m not sure what to do with all of this ammo.

If the space the ammunition occupies is not as valuable as the ammunition, break them down and sell the components. Everything is still usable, even the primers. This is the best way to scrap or toss them too.
Or sell them. It’s not like you are doing it for a job. Americans are allowed to sell stuff to each other.

If the space they occupy is equal to the value of the ammo, gift them to a friend.

If the space is more valuable, give them to anyone.

If the space is much more valuable, throw them away. De-clutter and free your self. It’s just plastic (the powder, not the boxes. Sell those.) and metal.:)

Besides the obvious cheeky comment... 'well, you need to buy firearms to shoot them in!' I would say to either pull the bullets and sell the components, discarding the powder, or sell the loaded cartridges as components... not loaded cartridges if you see what I mean. I'm sure you are a great guy (hey, you are here at THR, right?) but I would no more trust your handloaded cartridges, rifle cartridges in particular, in my firearms than anything... no offense. If we are talking about a small lot of cartridges, say 20 each of whatever chambering... I would probably just disassemble them completely and discard them.

I'm still trying to figure out the whole selling guns part. :D

But seriously, if you can salvage the components for other needs, I would.
I wouldn't sell home made ammo, just like I wouldn't buy it.

If you know exactly what components were used to make your ammo, you're no worse (may even be better!) than Vendor's selling reloads at Gun Shows.

Some will vehemently disagree with what I'm about to say, but if you're sure of your handiwork, nothing wrong with distributing to Friends/Family

If you're not exactly sure, and the quantity/component merits, (as in merit$) bust 'em down, sell 'em.

I agree with what sota said. Especially the first sentence, but also the second.

When it's been commercial ammo and I'm selling the last gun of a caliber, I include it in the sale. Example; the lucky person who bought my SKS also got the crappy Wolf steel-cased ammo I had left. If it's my reloads, I pull them apart and give away the cases as primed/cleaned. I'm sure you can find a use for the lead :)

If you build quality reloads that do not have function issues then giving them to family and friends would be a great idea. Selling them to anybody and exposing yourself to liability to people you don't know I would never do

So if I ever come to the point that there was ammo and nothing to shoot it in mine would be given to family members first or disassembled and reused as much as possible. Mine would be ID'd as to the primer, propellant, and bullet so recovering everything is no issue. Then sell the brass or recycle it with your other scrap. New/old factory I would sell to anyone that had money. I keep most of my ammo (I keep enough for next range trip/hunt loaded ahead) in componant form just because of this reason.

I guess disassembling the rounds would not really be much benefit to me either since I don't own any rifles in the same calibers. I don't have anyone to give them to because nobody shoots the round that I have leftover. I do record all the information about the reloads on the boxes of ammo, just for my own information, but I can see how it would be useful to someone else too. The whole listing the rounds for sale just seems like a waste of time to me. "I'm selling 22 rounds of 270 reloads, 38 rounds of 44 mag reloads, 19 rounds of 6.8 SPC reloads, etc." just seems kind of silly to me.

Could always sell the ammo for someone else to breakdown for the components (minus the powder)

I’d be all over it just with those 3 calibers assuming you were selling it at component value. $10 for those .270, $8 for the 6.8, etc.

I keep random ammo, and if I know somebody who shoots whatever caliber I have laying around I usually bring it along when we are shooting or doing something else together and I leave it in their care. The last batch of .308s I loaded have apparently taken 3 deer now, and I never even fired a round through MY .308 before I sold it.

I'll take some photos tomorrow and send to you then. I've also got 100 rounds of factory Hornady Black 762x39 with the SST bullet if you'd be interested in that. That's the only factory ammo I have.

Yeah, that’s just throw it away or scrap it.

Maybe just leave them in the bucket at the range...:)
But I like your idea. Everyone could use some good Karma.

It is easy, I never sell a firearm.

Then I always have a gun to shoot the ammunition I have on hand.

In reality, I’ve desposed of two firearms in 40 years of shooting and I had other guns that were chambered in the cartridge.

That's all well and good, but it doesn't help me at all. The guns are already sold. Can't turn back time.

If you have a local gun forum post it on there for local pick up. I get rid of that kind of stuff on our local (state) gun forum.
There are three semi local guys who deal in reloading stuff, sometimes I will take a bunch of uneeeded stuff and trade for stuff I can use.

What ever that brass is selling for used in them calibers is what it is worth.
