Federal HST 147 gr. If today's 147-grain rounds surpass 1,000 FPS, penetrate 13-15 inches, and expand to 3/4 of an inch in diameter, why stick with 124 +p knowing the recoil is 20% higher than 147s? Trust the technology folks.

I had forgotten about this thread...pretty robust resurrection!

Since I posted a year ago, premium ammo has been much easier to find in
Bloomington, IN., and many other places I assume. The prices are borderline decent at most shops and much better at Walmart.

Now, my family has moved to Indianapolis and I'm looking for a good local range in which to shoot off my premium ammo for occasional testing.

I no longer have the Golden Sabres, just because I had them in the mag for almost a year and shot them up so to rotate in some fresh ones. As some people have observed, any quality HP will more than likely do well so I just use the WWB 147gr. personal protection line...50 rounds for 21 bucks and its plentiful at WM just a couple miles down the street. I feel more comfortable using the heavier 9s, so there it is my friends.

Really, 20% higher? C'mon, now ... How is the recoil quantified by percentage? For most of us, recoil is pretty subjective, and at any rate, hand and wrist strength, form and recoil management technique vary from shooter to shooter.

If one is shooting from a steel-frame service size 9mm (SIG-P226, Beretta 92FS, CZ-75), I think it's a stretch to say 20%. Smaller, shorter-barrelled poly framed platform, you might notice a difference, but a good shooter is gonna be able to control the recoil to place quick, accurate shots if he practices enough.

Much ado about nothing.

I notice you have posted since I last asked for clarification on this issue.

I want to make sure you didn't miss this opportunity to explain yourself.

Not to put words in his mouth, but I suspect he meant approximately 20%, or really more just increased recoil from the +P (not surprising when comparing "+P" and non-"+P"). Federal HST 147 gr. is fantastic ammo, although so is the 124gr regular and +P. I don't think you can go wrong with any of those (or with a lot of other choices people are throwing out in this thread).

I haven't noticed a difference that would even come close to making me throw out the number 20%

Federal's own website only claims a MV of just 1000FPS for their non +P 147gr HST with 124gr +P starting at 1200FPS and remaining well over 1000FPS within normal pistol range. Not that velicity is everything, but I think there are valid reasons for chosing +P and 124gr bullets.

Let's try to stay on track please...there are enough threads focusing on "weight" wars...I'm just interested in what you're shooting in your 9mm and not in back and forth speculation and opinion regarding which is better, for in my opinion, as I have and others have stated, most modern designs will do for defense.

I'm torn between the 124+P Gold Dot and the 147 HST. The former is an all around proven performer. The latter is an exotic sexy thing. It's a mid-life crisis for sure.
