What do you guys hunt with .223? What bullet weights and rifles do you use?

Steve

I hunt prairie dogs, in South Dakota and Wyoming. I have had great luck with 40gr and 50gr V-Max out to 400 yards. Beyond 400 yards, bullet drop and wind start to become overwhelming.

groundhogs,chipmonks,river rats...rodents of all sorts.v max..black hills.ruger m77 with tasco 6-24x scope,harris bipod(the long one).an ar15 for general groundhoggin in close and coyotes.its the heavy barrel model-a2 16".no scope.

White tail deer and coyotes with 60g V-max on top of a load of Varget. Farthest deer kill so far was a 252 step shot in the neck - deer dropped like it was hit in the head with a hammer.

For you guys that hunt coyotes, do you find the .223 completely adequate? Would .243 be any better?

Thanks,
Steve

coyotes...yes.I have never fired a 243.the 223 vmax or ballisitic tipped ammo pretty much explodes on impact with anything hard such as bone.in a way,id compare it to a hollowpoint but with twice the performance.

Coyotes...

kitty cats...(sorry for the pic quality, my young daughter was trying to learn to use the digi cam)

crows, and any other vermin deemed applicable.

Rifle is a Bushmaster Varminter, scope is a Simmons AETEC 3.8x12x44AO in Rock River mounts, and the ammo is 55 Grain Nosler Ballistic tips over Win 748 in commercial brass.

I would say the .223 is good for anything up to a whitetail deer. I have two .223's and love the accuracy of them both. My target .223 is my browning A-bolt medallion with the boss system... shoots a tenth of an inch group or less consistantly at 100 yards. My hunting .223 is a remington 700 VS. As far as ammo goes... All guns shoot different with different ammo and loads. My browning loves the factory ultramax cheapo ammo and that is the ammo that shoots .1 @ 100. My remington on the other hand loves the hornady V-Max 40 and 50 grain which shoots a .25 @ 100. The V-max are good for varmits but if i'm taking it deer hunting I use the remington 55 grain core lokts which still shoot a .5 @ 100. And as far as taking down a coyote??? It's almost like it was made for coyotes. Oh and my scopes on them are both Bausch & Lombs. Leupold will work too :)
