What do you pay for FFL transfer fee?

I can get FFL transfers for $15 (online purchase) or $10 for an in-store. But I've got a friend of a friend that just got his FFL, and I know he'd transfer for me for $10.

Here in the great state of Tennessee, $10.00 goes to the state for every purchase. 1 firearm = 10.00 2 firearm =20.00 3 =30.0 etc.

The FFL that I use charges $20.00 for incoming and 10.00 + the actual UPS shipping charges for outgoing.

UPS will ship from a dealer for about $10-15, while they charge $60.00+ for individuals shipping the same item to the same address.

$50.00 is on the high side. I live near a relatively small city that has only two gun shops. The one I use charges $25.00.

My FFL charges $10 for a transfer but I give him $20. He is currently deployed in Iraq and I like to give a little extra to show my appreciation. I am sure his family can find the extra money helpful.

Transfer

Used to pay $15 but that dealer isn't doing transfers at all anymore. Best I can find now is $25 which I think is rediculous.

There are some locally who actually charge a percentage of the value of the gun! No idea how they determine that on a used gun--blue book? I would never give them any business so it really doesn't matter to me.

I pay $10. Thank you waterhouse! To anyone in the Austin/Round Rock, TX area he is highly recommended.

If the gun is purchased from another dealer then there's usually an invoice with it. I've noticed more and more dealers charging transfer fees based on percentage, and as a result I'm seeing a lot of invoices either 1) sealed in an envelope with the purchaser's name on it, or 2) the invoice just says $0.00 on it.

There's a dealer close to me that charges $35 + 10% for a transfer. They don't do a whole lot of them.

I dont get the high fees. We have built a loyal and grateful customer base from doing quick easy and inexpensive transfers, sure we wont retire on it but it gets our name out and makes for word of mouth marketing better then none.

Our fee is $20.00 for transfers ($10.00 for LEO and military), prior to setting it I looked at exactly what was involved and how much of our time it would take. Each transfer requires about 45 minutes of actual time which is why we set it at that price. What most people do not see is the time spent contacting the shipping party, sending a copy of our FFL and typically a few calls with the buyer.

$25 to $30 round here in the Tampa area, if you look hard, and will likely be a pawn shop or local 'smith. There are a few $50 merchants around here too.....they tend to be the high priced gunshops, and I believe that is their tactic to discourage you from buying online, and to get you to buy their overpriced guns instead.

My local FFL dealer charges $25 for a transfer; he's neither the lowest guy in town, nor is he the highest. But he provides an excellent service, he's 100% trustworthy, and he hasn't changed his prices in five years.

$18.50 plus tax, here. Comes out to a nice, round $20. :)

I think that's a very fair price considering that most are transfers from other businesses, although I do purchase from him on occasion. Receiving packages, securing them until I come by, and taking care of the required bureaucratic bs seems like a fair deal to me.

There is no sales tax on firearm transfers in Texas.

Firearms Sold by Out-of-State Dealers - Transfer Fees Charged by Texas Dealers
When a gun is purchased from out of state by an individual in Texas, federal law provides that the out-of-state seller must ship the gun to a Texas dealer for transfer to the individual.

Frequently, the Texas dealer will charge the purchaser a transfer fee to cover the costs of paperwork and handling. Because the gun was not purchased from the Texas dealer, the transfer fee does not represent a sale. Therefore, the transfer fee is not taxable.

For example, assume an individual paid $1,500 to an out-of-state seller for a gun. The out-of-state seller shipped the gun to a Texas gun dealer. The customer picked up the gun at the Texas dealer's place of business and was charged a $25 transfer fee by the dealer. The $25 transfer fee is not considered a sale for Texas sales and use tax purposes and therefore is not subject to sales tax.

The purchase of the gun itself is, however, subject to Texas use tax. If the out-of-state seller does not collect the applicable Texas tax, then the purchaser is responsible for accruing and remitting the tax directly to the Comptroller's office. The Texas gun dealer handling the transfer is not responsible for collecting the use tax since the Texas dealer is not the seller of the gun. Purchasers may use a Texas Occasional Use Tax Return (Form 01-156) to report and remit the Texas use tax on the purchase of a firearm from an out-of-state gun dealer.

I'll add one warning to dealing with FFL's that I learned the hard way. About Thanksgiving I shipped a gun to a person who was a dealer in Montana. I shipped the wrong gun and told him I'd refund his money or send the correct gun. Well, he ended up going in the hospital for 4 weeks before even shipping the gun back to me.

Now the second part. The FFL I used in my town had his foot operated on and was not able to receive the gun for about 5 weeks. So for a gun that should have been returned in about a week I waited 9 weeks.

My lesson, I will never work with another FFL that doesn't have a full time store where someone else can take over should something happen.
