I have been using some Otis Tech cleaning kit I got for free from one of their reps. It's very good, but I don't want to spend the money buying a new one.

I also bought some Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber that seems to work well and the best anti-corrosion/rust spray I have ever used is called Corrosion X. It's ideal for guns and I even spray it into my electronics. I actually dropped my phone in some water once, sprayed it down with Corrosion X, and it never stopped working. Good stuff.

What do you use to clean your guns and would you recommend anything over Gun Scrubber?

I use hoppes mixed with kroil for a solvent. RIG +P for lubricant and plain RIG for rust protection. Also I fan of breakfree clp and eezox for some applications.

Gun Cleaning and Lubes

Smokeless:
Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber & High Volume Compressed Air
Hoppes Elite Gun Cleaner
Hoppes Bore Cleaner
Lube: Miltec
Holy Black:
Dawn & Hot Water High Volume Compressed Air
Ballistol
Lube: Ballistol Only

I use Ed's Red.

It is homemade from equal parts:
Kerosene--primary ingredient in Hoppes. (K1 indoor heater)
Mineral Spirits--primary ingredient in Rem-Oil. ("Odorless")
Dexron ATF--good lubricant for gun usage.

All said and done Ed's Red costs me $0.97 per 12oz.

For store bought I was partial to Breakfree CLP, and still have some around.

I use butches bore shine for getting the copper out. I use a piece of a metal chore boy to clean the lead out of my 45 70 barrel, works great.

The only other thing I use is CLP to clean off powder residue. I oil em up with LP (without the C). I do use a rusty's rag which is a sheepskin applicator for silicone oil for the outside.

I live in a dry state so I also treat most of my barrels with Plate +. After each cleaning with butches I dry the barrel out with denatured alcohol and then run a patch with plate + on it. It very noticeably reduces fouling and makes cleaning easier. It is best if you can start with a new barrel but it will work on any barrel. The only downside is if you get it on your bluing and that bluing is exposed to moisture it will corrode very quickly. Not a problem for me in dry Colorado and I go to some trouble to keep it off the exterior.

I use Hoppe's No.9 and have recently discovered discovered Tipton's Truly Remarkable Bore Solvent. The Tipton's will scorch the nose hairs right out of your nasal passages, but works very well, a nylon bore brush is required.

Clenzoil for cleaning and lubrication. Won't hurt any leather it comes in contact with or soften the wood stocks.

Superposed

Right now i use Breakfree CLP for a bore cleaner, And Rem oil to put a light coating in the bore after cleaning because it is very thin. I use the Breakfree to lubricate a bolt action because it is more viscous. And I use tetra gun Grease in my triggers, and on the slide rail of a semi auto.

I typically use either BreakFree CLP or Remington Oil Wipes (the ones that look like single use wet wipes). I've been happy with both. For rifles, that's all i really use. For pistols, I've taken to cleaning with that and then adding grease to the rails. Not sure it really matters much.

Clenzoil for lubricant and to wipe down the exterior. Also use Rusty's Rag to wipe down exterior. Foaming bore cleaner or Butch's (non abrasive) bore cleaner. Copper Chore Boy and Kroil to remove lead.

Stupid question: Are Scotch Pads abrasive enough to damage barrel steel?

308,

OH YES. Will take any bluing off instantly, bad JUJU ! I said bluing before I ask if thats whats on your firearm, sorry about that. Scotch pads won't be on my gun bench.

CLP products (clean, lubricate, protect) are better today than ever before. I use Eezox. Breakfree is also a good one.

I should have been clearer. I was asking in the context of using the Scotch Pad material on the internal chamber/bore surfaces not on the external surfaces. I know what Scotch Pads will do to auto clear coat finishes - how, let your imagination work.

Breakfree CLP for the things that need cleaning and oiling, and Tetra grease for the parts that need greasing.

I use Ed's Red for gun cleaning. My formula differs from Waywatchers as I add acetone to the mix. I do pour off a little before adding the acetone for use as a lubricant.

I've used Hoppes # 9 for so long that I dream of the great odor. To clean a rifle so that the first shot will be where you want it use Shooters Choice. The local swat teams use nothing but it and after trying it I swear by it. Running a dry patch through the bore before shooting the first shot I am always on target. Shooting High Power rifle years ago I always had to shoot a few rounds through the rifle before going for record - I don't have to do this with Shooters Choice.
