I went to pick out a new revolver today. I decided on a new S&W 642. I noticed it is stamped 642-2. What does the -2 stand for? I vaguely remember seeing a post that contained a 642-3. Am I remembering correctly? Just wondering what the latest incarnation of the 642 is? Also the serial number starts with a CH, any way of finding out the approximate date of manufacture? Thanks for any help.

-2 guns are rated for +P ammunition.
The finish was slightly changed to more closely match the aluminum frames color to the stainless steel cylinder and barrel with less than stellar results. HTH

Supica-Nahas Standard catalog, 642 no dash, not +P rated
642-1 is +P rated
Lengthened frame, floating firing pin, longer cylinder.
The 442-1 features the same improvements in blue.
My gun is a 642-1, I thought it was a -2.
-2 guns also have the side mounted lock under the thumbpiece.
