I have a 1931 12ga Browning A5 and was cleaning it and noticed that there was a choke number on the underside of the barrel. It says CHOKE 18.3

Can anybody tell me what this means? Is this equivalent to imp, mod, full?

I have been using this gun for dove hunting and I do pretty well, but am thinking about another gun. Thanks

MC

18.3 is the bore size in mm of that choke.

If I remember right 18.3 is about a "full" but I can't find a chart. I've seen charts that show the equivalent choke names but I can't remember where.

I looked for charts online, but they were all vague and dependent on some other variables. Does anyone know if this is going to be equivalent to full, mod, or imp?

18.3mm is approximately .7205".

Assuming that .729/.730 equals cylinder bore, that barrel would be choked improved cylinder (bore minus ten points).

look for these markings on the left side of the barrel:

BROWNING CHOKES AND THEIR CODES (ON REAR LEFT-SIDE OF BARREL)

* designates full choke (F).

*- designates improved modified choke (IM).

** designates modified choke (M).

**- designates improved cylinder choke (IC).

**$ designates skeet (SK).

*** designates cylinder bore (CYL).

I dont see any of those markings on the side of my barrel. There is a star at one point but it has an H next to it.
