I'm looking for a SHTF gun and settled on a double stack 45. If you have experience with any I'd really like to hear about it. Pics are always helpful too!!!!

I have a Para Ordnance P-14 .45 acp that I like very much indeed. It is not the LDA model, just a 'fat' 1911. Mine is 100% reliable, very accurate. Give 'em a look.

a 1911 double would be great might want to look at eaa too depending on your taste

Welcome to THR. How much money you want to spend? XD45 and S&W M&P .45 are both good choices around $650 to $850 for extras (e.g. night sights, poopy color, etc). The XD will hold a few more rounds though. Also, it has a grip safety like a 1911, if that's something you would want. The HK45 is officially coming out this year. Don't know how much it will cost. You can get an FNP45 for about $700 to $725. Glock, of course, which you can get for about $25 because they are fugly. Just kidding. :p Ruger, Taurus, and Walther all have similar offerings as well. IMO, the XD just plain shoots smooth. I haven't shot the M&P .45 but own an M&P 9mm, which I like a whole lot. Very reliable. Springfield and S&W customer service are exceptional. I don't know about the rest - although I've heard stories about HK.

XD45 Compact (4" or 5") best of both, you get to choose long mag or short mag each time you use it! On left w/ long mag.

I've shot a Para 14-45, that one was very accurate. I own a CZ97B and that is very accurate but only holds 10 rounds. My XD holds 16 but is only a 9mm. Lots of choices out there. Have fun.

+1 on the XD 45C with the long mag/short mag for versatility. Although, if you're wanting the .45 for concealed carry, there are better choices than a fat double stack.

If your looking for carry, a double stack is heavier. I carry a Para P12-45 on occasion. The weight isn't too bad, but get a GOOD holster, and belt. Especially with the compacts. With the shorter barrel, and the extra ammo, the grips will shift back, and forth if you don't have a good holster/ belt. para.gif

Two recommendations: a Bul M5 or a Tanfoglio.

I used to write gun reviews for a periodical on a regular basis. A friend in the business asked me to review a Bul M5. I did and it was the finest double-stack .45 I ever shot. It still retains that status. It is now imported by Charles Daly. I'm not sure if it is the same as the one I reviewed a decade ago, but it's made in the same place by the same company.

I was frustrated when I reviewed that pistol because I HAD to send it back. Usually when you review a gun they let you buy it at a discount or give it to you. They wouldn't even let me buy it at full retail. They wife recently gave me her permission to buy an M5 and I am currently shopping. Guess she just couldn't stand seeing me bring up pictures of M5s on the net and sighing anymore.

Plus, Charles Daly has a true lifetime guarantee. And the boss at Charles Daly is a regular here on THR. So if you ever have a problem with a Bul M5...

The Tanfoglio is a whole 'nother thing. It is a CZ clone, but takes the CZ format to the next level. Get a Tanfoglio steel-frame, full-size .45 and you can get conversion kits to make it shoot: .41 A&E; 10mm auto; 40 S&W; 9mm; .38 super; 22 rimfire - and with very little effort .40 Corbon; .357 Sig and 9X23. One frame, many calibers.

My Tanfoglio (better known as EAA Witness) in full-size, steel frame will rip a single big hole at 25 yards, but it can be 10mm auto in about 15 seconds if I want.

EAA's service sucks, but there are a lot of suppliers of parts and accessories. And, if you do like I do (get a full size steel frame, a full-size poly frame and compact poly frame) worst case scenario is one becomes a parts gun to keep two other guns in the caliber of your choice operational.

If I were to trust my life and that of those who depend on me on one gun it would probably be the Bul M5, but if I had to depend on one gun to get me by when the SHTF it would certainly be the Tanfoglio - with a whole lot of conversion kits, frames and different kinds of ammo...

I have an xd45 compact that i like a lot. As already pointed out, it has short 10+1 mags to use for concealed carry, and a 13+1 magazine with a grip extender on it to use for the range or the nightstand.
The grip doesn't feel huge like on some of the glock .45's and it has the same angle as a 1911, which i prefer, as well as a 1911 style grip safety. They have just announced a new model with a thumb safety as well, but i don't know if it comes in a compact model. I think it is meant for le agencies with active safety requirements.

Supprised no one has mentioned the HK USP. I have one and it is the most accurate out of all my .45's. They are pricey but they are great shooters.

I have an H&K USP fullsize 45. It is absolutely the most reliable handgun I have ever owned. Period. Having said that, it's for sale. Why? 3 reasons:

#1 It's too big for my hand. Like holding a piece of 2x4.

#2 I'm trying to raise the money to attend a Blackwater Training course next fall.

#3 As I age I'm gravitating away from the 45acp to the 9mm. So when I replace the USP it will probably be with the P30 9mm. I may also buy the H&K 45 just cuz it feels so nice in my hands, but the P30 really shines in that regard!

I have owned several double stack 45s. The USP and the Glock 21 were my favs along with the Glock M30 which IMHO is perfect for ccw. Plus it takes M21 hi-cap mags. But again, it felt too blocky for my grip. I've never owned an XD45 but I have fired one and that is one sweeeeeeet firearm! Most of the folks I know who do have one swear by them. I don't like any of the ParaOrdnance products that are double stacks. Especially the LDA actions. Those seem too fragile IMHO to serve in a SHTF scenario. The bottom line is that you won't go wrong with a Glock or any H&K.

Thats the only reason I haven't got the M&P in 45 to match my 9mm. I keep hearing the hi-cap mags are coming, but nothing yet. Or how many, and will it alter the grip at all.

para's make great guns and i wish i had the hand size to hold and shoot one comfortably but that is simply not the case. i say go for the xd .45 13+1 capacity plus it is in a great size package, a tiny bit bigger than the 9/40 cal modelss but not by much. it is the first double stack .45acp that i have been able to shoot and do so good and comfortably. if i was in the market that is what i would go with. though i am kinda partial to the xd's as i own 2 and i love em.
