So having finally found my warm and fuzzies in a carry piece (G26) I need to find the same in a SHTF gun. I've deided on a double stack .45 ACP but dont know much about the ones out there. I kow theres the XD, P220, G21sf, USP and so on but would like to hear from those of you who own these fine pistols. Please let me know what you think of them and help me decide which to get. Pics and picture comparisons would be appreciated.

I've only ever owned one doublestack .45, my XD.
I like it fine, and it's never failed to feed or fire regardless of what I've fed it.

It's also comfy and points well for me.
I'm sure you'd do well with anything you've listed, or even with a good doublestack 1911 clone.

I like the USP45 myself, that's what's in my nightstand. It points in a similar way to 1911's for me, but feels a bit softer on recoil with SD loads. It's accurate, feeds anything, and has yet to malfunction. Next favorite would be the Sig P220, but it's not a double stack. I've yet to shoot the new HK45 that's out now, but I hear very good things about it.

There's a new FN .45 coming out that has 14 round mags... Anybody have more info on this?

x2 on the HK USP .45 fullsize (12 in the mag +1). It doesn't fit well if you have small-ish hands. But in a normal size or larger hand....VERY NICE. Well built, very reliable, fun to shoot and easy to maintain.

They may even be dropping in price with the arrival of the single-ish stack HK45, which is supposed to have a bit narrower grip (but capacity drops to 10+1), and was to be HK's entry in the JCP/JSP trials for the new military issue handgun.

The USP Compact 45 and the soon to arrive HK45 Compact are also great guns to look into. Mag capacity is 8+1, solidly built accurate shooters. The slightly smaller size makes them easier to conceal if that is a possibility where you live.

Equipped with Meprolight sights, LaserMax, and SureFire X200B, my G21 is my bedside gun.

Thousands of rounds, without a hiccup.

Drop in a KKM .45 ACP : 10 mm Conversion Barrel, and 10 mm magazines, and it shoots 10 mm for me too!

+1 on the XD45.

My XD45Tac has been 100% flawless thru well over 1500rds now and I shoot it better than any other pistol I've ever owned or shot.

2nd would be the G21, if it fits your hand.

Well I am a huge fan of the M&P for just about everything but if you already like the glock grip angle and such than go with a GLOCK since there are SO MANY extra mags available and that matters for SHTF. I say be first in line for some of the super hicap glock drums. But buy an M&P anyway.

Glock or XD

In a real SHTF scenario (hurricane aftermath, riots etc)both of them would be peachey. You can be seriously neglectful of those pistols and they will keep firing. A P220 would work well too.

Your already using a Glock for CCW, I would vote for using a Glock for Home defense to keep the manual of arms and feel similar as possible. I have a 21sf and really like it so far - haven't had it too long, but it seems to shoot softer and easier then my 36.

If you carry a Glock26, which is 9mm, why carry a .45 for a SHTF situation? Its ok to have a .45 to have a .45, but when SHTF, you dont want to carry two types of ammo. 9mm is more prevalent and you already own a 9mm gun. When SHTF you gotta hit the ground running.

I know its not what you're asking, but I'd say go 9mm.

Or the XD .45 if you really want a .45

Glock 21SF

That will be the next .45ACP that I buy, hopefully within the next couple of months. Got to get one with the regular Glock rail and single sided mag release, as I've got 21 mags already.

IF it is for true SHTF, then I would go out and find which one you can buy spart parts for (extractor, ejector, firing pin, FP spring, recoil spring, main spring, trigger group, sights, etc. then buy a couple of spare parts sets. Then go buy the pistol.

Some great pistols are impossible to buy parts for, you have to send it to the manufacturer. Or you can buy parts, but it will cost you $200 per set. This is one of the important reasons I like the Glock pistols for SHTF. I can buy a complete set of parts very low cost from multiple sources.

the 1911 has plentiful parts, but some of them can get pricey.

If you cannot buy or afford spare parts, then what will you do when SHTF, last an extended time and a part on your pistol breaks? Sure you can have multiple pistols, if you can afford it. But do you really want to have a pistol out of action when SHTF because a $3.50 part broke?

I hope you don't have smallish hands because every doublestack .45 I've ever shot was uncomfortable in my hands. I've only owned an XD45, but I've shot the USP (great gun) in .45 as well a some sort of x2stack Glock thingy.

I stick with 1911s for my .45s now.

I like the HK USP Tactical .45 for this role. I like the ability to throw a flash suppresor or can on the end if needed, especially for SHTF.
