I prefer the 1/2 & 1/2 because I'm frequently on my boat, and it comes in handy on the lines. I find it's tough to cut synthetic lines with a plain edge.

I don't use a knife much with the exception of cutting cardboard boxes, in which case, either style will do.

Plain every time

Gotta be plain for me
Serrated tends to tear things and is a PITA to sharpen
Had serrated ones in my earlier days but now all palin - all sharp

Take care

Plain hawkbill for a daily user, but if could only have one blade instead of the 4-5 normally on me, it would a blend of probably 70% plain 30% teeth.

I tend to stick with plain blades. They are much easier to sharpen on the go and use. I always find it annoying for the half and half with the size blades I use at 3 inches or so. It just results in a couple of little knives. My multitool that I usually carry has both plain and serrated blades on it, though I rarely use the serrated blade. My EDC is usually a plain edge Kershaw Blur or Leek and s done everything I asked it to do. My camp knives are also plain edge, being a HI Khurkri or a Rat RC-4.

Serration is no substitute for a high quality, razor sharp blade. Folks have just gotten used to having dull, low-quality blades around so they don't understand what the real thing can do.

All of my non-kitchen knives are plain edge with the exception of a CRKT Hammond A.B.C. Operator which has serrations on the spine and is a tanto-style blade. It is pretty much everything I hate in a knife normally, but I have come to like it and it is great when I'm at the grill.

I have one fully serrated knife, Spyderco Endura. I have a couple with both which I bought to try out. I won't buy another partially serrated knife.
