I started out with plain (non-serrated) edges knives then tried a few 1/2 and 1/2 knives (half serrated). After issues with sharpening the serrated portion I have switched back to plain edge only.
 
Plain edge for me. I have a couple of full SE knives for chores that might require one, but my defensive knives are PE only. I can't stand combo edges. They're the worst of both worlds IMO.
 
I carried both PE and SE for a while but for the last 10 years I have been using a CE benchmade and its worked out ok. I have both PE and full SE for times when ones needed. The only thing I don't like about combo edge is it seems like its not enough SE to do much good and not enough PE for a good slice.
 
Plain Edge Only

I have a few combo edges that I got when I was trying different things to see what worked best for me.

I've just never been able to warm to them.

I find them too hard to control for up-close fine work.

When I have an application for "ripping" or hacking stuff, I just use an adequate and well-sharpened plain edge.

The only fully serrated blade I use is a bread knife; and even then I will often just use a really sharp plain edge.

Tomatoes and bagels: sharp plain edge.

Maybe it's a character flaw.

 
PLAIN for me too. Much easier to maintain and more than good enough for most jobs. Serated has its advantages for rescue ie. cutting tough rope, seat belts etc. but a good sharp plain edge will also do the job. Plain is much more versatile.
 
I prefer straight edge, however if its a solid plain knife with a serrrated spine like SeekHer said, it only makes it that much more useful
 
I used to be plain only, but now I'm going through a half serrated phase. There is one application at my work where I have to cut some tuff plastic where the serration comes in handy, so for now I will stick with it.
 
The knives that are my favorite to carry are a m16 CRKT 1/2 serated with a tanto tip, A ballisong that has a titanium bonded blade drop point with half serated. Several of my knives have seration. I do like my buck evolution i believe is the correct one that is double oposing blades, one full serated, one plain.

I abuse my cheaper knives that i can readily replace. The CRKT I have used the seration to help build a fuzzy stick for starting a smudge pot.
 
Question for those that prefer plain blades

Do you carry these for work (as in every day cutting jobs) or defense?

I've been stabbed and slashed before. Personal experience tells me serrated hurts a lot more and does a lot more damage.
 
I use mine daily for cutting chores. Tape, boxes, rope, hose, zip ties and so on. I think serrated hurts more because it tears, but I think a plain edge, all other things being equal, will slice flesh deeper.
 
It all depends on what is the right tool for the job really. That is why I usually have a little of everything in the collection.
 
IMO There isn't a whole lot that a serrated-edge can do that sharp plain-edge can't do.

My thoughts exactly. I went to cut away at a piece of wood and dug through a few 1/2 and 1/2 folding knives til I found the one I usually carry (I set it aside because the screws were coming loose) that was a plain ol' edge.
 
Unless you are in the rope business, I don't see serrations as being much benefit in the long run.
 
Plain edge, and straight at that, like the Kershaw Leek or Needs Work.

I'll admit that 1/2 and 1/2s are handy sometimes, but now will only buy them in SOFT steel so that the serrations are easily sharpenable. They won't hold an edge long, but at least I can get them sharp without spending 3 days sharpening and cussing.
 
Plain edges only for me too, less the bread knife. Maintaining serrated edges is a royal PITA.
