What "edged" weapon has the greatest "Fear Factor" for you...

As a knife crime victim, any blade being thrust toward you is scary. I was attacked with a Leatherman PST, plain blade. While I know for fact that only the plain knife blade was extended, in the aftermath, I would have sworn that all sorts of pointy contraptions (including implements not actually on the knife, ie serrations) were present. The blade definetely looked longer than it really was too.

I would have to go with the straight razor or common box cutter/utility knife. Every thug in the world has one. They are extremely sharp, cut deep and if hit right you might not even know that you are cut until it is to late. I saw a guy get cut to shreds with one by a girl at a night club once. I can't say that he did not deserve it for how he tried to man handle her but wow what a way to sober up.

A friggen karambit held by some kung fu master is my nightmare because that blade is made for slicing fast and puncturing your stomach and yanking out your intestines.

My daughter's boyfriend would say my 54" Claymore is a VERY menacing edged weapon. Especially when I am sharpening it on the front porch as he approaches to take her out. Never mind the fact that I am 6'8" and 300 lbs and sharpening it while STANDING on the porch. But, you know what? My daughter said that he was the perfect gentleman on their date. :D

Ahhh, so instead of the old cleaning-the-shotgun-routine, you stand there sharpening 4 1/2 feet of sharp steel. I liiike it! :D

Any Kukuri. The idea of being delimbed/decapitated as opposed to stabbed/sliced certainly sticks in my mind when considering these.

Anyone else think it is interesting that so many people are naming things that are very unlikely to be encountered?

At least with a machete you are likely to see it.

"...very unlikely to be encountered"

Most folks won't ever encounter a shark either, but plenty of them will tell you that they're terrified of them in spite of that. It's mostly fantasy.

My one encounter with being attacked with a weapon was with a screw driver. Nasty.

About three years back we had a ''love triangle gone bad'' situation,up here on the North Coast, and a machete was involved, one guy in prison, the other with some nasty defensive wounds missing some pieces of fingers on both hands and some chunks just gone on his forearms.

This entire thread had me thinking of knives for sure (And for me any knife is a dangerous opposition) however oddly enough a syringe is what I fear the most. I am not afraid of needles at the docs office/hospital, however the thought about getting attacked with one scares me more then most knives. Probably because a lot of people I deal with have them on their person, and it could be hard to see coming.

Machete, or an axe. When I was training in the martial arts, I remember reading a story. A black belt was standing alone, waiting for a train. A kid snuck up behind him and knifed him while he wasn't paying attention, killing him. I think it was a robbery. Just goes to show you that you need to be aware of your surroundings...

Cool. It is the stuff of little boys' bad dreams and movies. I have what many call a banana or pineapple knife, it is quite sharp and I used to carry it and use it the same as a short machete. It mostly sits around these days and I have no idea where it is. Probably in some moving box that I never opened after moving.

a chilean Corvo

The corvo in the picture is a "corvo historiado", that means "a corvo with history" (a corvo used to kill a man, in this case 4 people). You can see that in the rounds decorations of the blade

A arrow with a gnarly broadhead from a powerful bow. I've seen what they do to deer and elk.
