It seems like the stuff has basically disappeared in the US, and been replaced by clear polymer coated steel cased ammunition. Where did it go and why?

Also where can I still get some(I think it looks cool)?

No, it's not completely gone.

Wolf is now polycoated. But Monarch brand ammunition (Academy sells it) and Golden Tiger brand both have the lacquer coating.

Shooters complained of the lacquer coating gumming up chambers. Hence, the polycoated Wolf (which I still see being advertised as "New Polycoat!" when it's been that way for a few years)

Whatever happened to the green lacquered ammo in brown paper wrappers with cool Russian writing all over it? Used to sell for something like $2.98 a box. I could shoot all day for $20.00. :D

Doc,

Where did $2.98/box go on any ammo these days? Seriously, prices have been insane since about 2006 or so. I remember buying Winchester white-box .223 for right around $3/box of 20 within the past 5 years or so. That stuff was running nearly $10/box last I checked!

As for the green lacquered ammo, I still have a few boxes laying around for my SKS. Frankly, I've never really had any issues with this stuff. I never shot Wolf through my AR-15's, but it has worked very well with SKS/AK type firearms.

I bought 5K rds of the stuff when it was 90 bucks a case of 1,000. Well before the shortages occurred. Also bought a batch of bullets and reloaded in brass cases left on the range. The reloads went thru a Ruger 77 in 7.62X39 but the rifle was, as most of the Rugers I was stupid enough to buy, a POS so it got sold. The reloads now go thru a Arsenal SAM 7S. The laquered steel case ammo goes thru a SKS and a Saiga. I shoot 22rf's most of the time so probably have a lifetime supply of 7.62X39, esp. with reloading.

I bought some Brown Bear ammo in 9mm that was green lacquered...shot it all last year and bought it online somewhere. I can try to dig if you would like to find it...

That was Wolf ammunition before it was known as Wolf. It once was a lot less than $3 a box.

I'm just surprised somebody actually misses the stuff ! ! !

We all miss the price.

All the Wolf ammo I see now is polycoated.

Brown Bear is lacquered and is readily available. There is also Silver Bear which is Zinc plated steel case if you want to avoid the lacquered ammo.

Russian ammo is flooding the market right now and helping to drive prices down.

I picked up a bulk pack of wolf recently and asked the gun shop owner if it was indeed laquer coated because that is what it said on the box but the ammo did not appear to be laquer coated and he explained that it was but their process has changed as to not show any drips and that they put on a much thinner coat so that the laquer would not heat up and cause as many malfuctions as associated with the old drippy, messy stuff. To me it really didn't look laquer coated but this was the explanation I received but as mentioned in the posts above there is some of that old school around you'll just have to look and it probably won't be $2.50-$3.00 a box anymore. Personally I have no problem using corrosive yugo surplus in my ak's as I clean them often.

i bought some brown bear that was lacquered about 2 months ago for a m44 no issues
