Bought 100 rounds of Wolf Military Classic HP 7.62x39 today to keep the new Saiga I bought today fed. Got them for about $3.50 a box, which isn't great but not bad either.

I opened them up on the way home and noticed they weren't quite what I expected. They're hollow points and seem to be lacquer sealed at both the bullet and primer, but there's no green lacquer on the steel casing.

What does this look like to you as I have no experience with Wolf. Is this no sealant at all or is this their newer polymer coating?

Thanks for any help. I don't want to have bought a bad batch of ammo.

Looks normal to me.

I can't say exactly what Wolf Military Classic should look like, but I have personally burned several thousand rounds that looked just exactly like that through several AKs and SKSs. The hollowpoint is a non-expanding field hollowpoint type thing. It's real handy for shooting at ranges that prohibit FMJ on the rifle range.

The red laquer is just a sealant, and I think the gray is the polymer coating. Should work just fine.

This is news to me. The reason I bought the Military Classic rounds is that I had heard online that supposedly they had superior Hollow Point design that would actually expand upon impact.

I had planned on buying these to practice with and keep for defense purposes as they shouldn't over-penetrate as badly as FMJ rounds.

If these are just the same as regular Wolf HP rounds, I'm a bit disappointed. :(

that grey color is the polymer coating as far as i know. i have shot the old and the new and that stuff you bought looks just like what i have been shooting for the last few months. I like the grey stuff and have had no issues with it or the old stuff ever. but I do prefer the polymer coated stuff.

Headstamp looks like 2 arrows in a circle, with the arrows going opposite directions.

I just Googled "Wolf headstamp" and it appears that this is the Ulyanovsk ammo headstamp, which would be correct for the Wolf Military Classic line. This is supposed to be better than the generic Wolf stuff.

Odd to see it coming in the polymer casing and not the lacquer like I was expecting.

Its ok

They look exactly like they should. Mine are the same as well.

This is an excellent round, made with the "Uly" bullet, sort of the "Holy Grail" of AK bullets. Accurate, consistent and frags very well.

The ammo section of the akforum board has a large writeup on this round and it gets a big thumbs-up.

By the way - how could you just have bought a 100 rds? At that rate your rifle will starve and you will have committed a sin :>

The red that you describe at the csase mouth and over primer is common. That is a waterproofer, and is supposed to aid in keeping water from damaging the powder if the rounds were exposed to adverse conditions.

Wolf stopped using the traditionl green tone coating in favor for a new product for their steel cases a few years ago, and the new product is touted as being less fouling (supposadly).

Well you got me curious enough to start digging through the closet. My Wolf Military Classic FMJ has green lacquered cases.

If yours didn't have Uly headstamps I would have guessed Wolf put the wrong ammo in the box. They have been known to do that. I found some 5.56mm ammo in a 5.45x39mm box once.

That's weird. It's the first I've heard of the WMC having polymer coated instead of lacquered cases. I got case of WMC 7.62x39 FMJ from Cabela's and it came with the green lacquered cases.

Where did you buy it?

I bought 200 rounds of the new-style package Wolf Military Classic, and the ammo is laquered like the old Wolf used to be. Not polymer coated.

I picked up 100 rounds of WMC JHP the other day from Sportman's Warehouse. I intended to get FMJ, but didn't look closely enough at the packaging. Anyway, it's a green lacquered case, not like the polymer stuff. My hands were dirtier loading 20 rounds of polymer-coated than loading 100 rounds of the lacquered stuff. I think you got a batch intended for someplace else.

I got it from the Bargain Barn in Jasper, GA. Great place, really big and well stocked on all kinds of hunting and outdoor accessories. The guy told me he had just received a big shipment of the stuff. I know I should have bought more but my budget is still recovering from the Saiga and CZ Kadet kit I picked up this weekend. Plus my girlfriend was with me. She might have gotten concerned if I bought the whole shipment. :uhoh:

Ya think? I wonder if I should hang onto it. Maybe there's a market for collectable Wolf ammo? :p
