Who else here reambers when handloading was popular, when ever shooter/hunter had a old military rifle in his collection. When you cast your own bullets and never so much as thought about buying your own. When a saturday was for hunting and not for smoking crack. When the kids down the street did not knock over stores. What is changing in the world that is making use move away from the basics of amican life and gun culture?

GOD BLESS

HANDLOADER

I thought hand loading was more popular than ever. I don’t smoke crack on Saturdays or any other days, and so far as I know, none of the neighborhood kids have robbed any liquor stores.

Oh, and while I don’t hunt, I do have an old military rifle or two.

I remember when the Brown Bess was the most advanced firearm! :p

But I do appreciate your point Handloader. I've often thought of getting a Kentucky Rifle or a 1847 Walker Colt, or Remington 1858 just for the experience.

I'll tell you what I' really like though. a Double-Barrel Muzzle-loading Shotgun. That would really please me to load and operate that. By the way, do they make replicas of those shotguns? (What the heck do I know. I was only born a few years ago! )

Yes sir, I hear ya. I think we realize that "things have changed",but I also agree that handloading is more common than ever.Yep,we know that there are far more "on the other side" as well..We need to keep our chins off of our chests & keep doing everything we can to maintain the lifestyle that we enjoy.
Getting new people involved in the shooting sports should be at the top of all of our lists.

You been sneaking around my house??? :)

Whatever happened? You got old and nostalgic. You mean the good ole days when kids got drunk on bad moonshine, reloading involved black powder, and folks had old military rifles because they could not afford anything else?

What is changing in the world that is making use move away from the basics of amican life and gun culture?

What is "amican life?"

Oh, right, you mean those days of nostalgic yesteryear when even the wars were good. Sorry, nostalgia is just a pipe dream, just without the crack.

Well, I do still "roll my own" from time to time:D:D:cool:. I have a .577 Enfield rifle-musket for Civil War reenacting and live fire competition. I know quite a few shooters who reload brass and cast. 70% of them are over 50.

Don't know about anyone else, but I still handload all of my hunting rounds. And, yes I have an old "military" rifle put up.

I still handload, I have a Garand, and I think weekends are great for hunting.

As far as the kids down the street, I don't know what they're up to. Probably playing video games. I don't see kids outside much. THAT has changed since I was a kid.

I'd love to "pass the torch" to some younger shooters. About all I can do is try to encourage the younger members of our rifle and pistol club...

Then what day am I allowed to smoke crack on? :D

My 4yo son can use a turkey mouth call (for clucks, anyway), shoot a bow, catch a fish, and pull the handle on my Dillon 450 like a champ.

All we smoke is jerky and brisket.

I don't know if handloading has increased or decreased in popularity, but I will say that I'm not keen on handling and sniffing vapor from, lead used in casting bullets. I want my boys swimming hard when the time comes. And Tuesday is crack day - rest of the week I'm clean as a whistle.

Same here, besides people who smoke crack do it daily and not just Saturdays. Its not like pizza night or movie night.

When you cast your own bullets and never so much as thought about buying your own.

Well I live in an apartment and I just don't have the time to cast as much as I would like to shoot. I plan to cast 44 and 454 when I get a house just for kicks but I don't think I will ever find myself casting every caliber I shoot.

one of my friends at work reloads, of course I shoot 357 and 38special and 9mm, he shoots 44 special, so he is already in a much more expensive class.

Still, I work an hourly job, and did a little bit of figuring, where sans setup cost, and assuming brass to last 10 reloads (no idea really) how much would it cost to create 50 handloads, which while much less than buying factory ammo, was indeed something (IIRC $5 something)

I determined that rather than take an hour at home reloading I could just spend an hour longer at work, and convert that amount of my paycheck to inexpensive target ammo. (and I don't get paid that much)

People's situations may vary. I also don't have a lot of room. Possibly if I was shooting more expensive calibers it would pay off more. Possibly if I had a salaried job rather than an hourly it would make sense.

Also realize that for some people, reloading is tinkering, and they enjoy tinkering, so they'd probably reload even if it was only saving them pennies per box rather than dollars, before even factoring in their time investment

I guess several of us could write a book on this subject.
What's changed? Our culture changed. We put consumption before everything else. We placed way too much emphasis on bigger, better and winning....... at all cost. I want it now and I'll pay for it later ....maybe! The ends justifying the means can wash a lot of consciences.
We too often opted for war out of ignorance, fear or some misguided machismo when alternatives methods were clearly more effective.
All this takes it's toll on us as a society.
We talk Christian values but too often our behavior is anything but.
We now are a country divided ......an "us and them" society which takes a little of our collective soul daily.
The last several years has only escalated our deterioration.
Even here on the old fashion fun forum we obsess about shootin' them before they shoot us.
Norman Rockwell is surely dead...Perhaps we killed him!

CRITGIT

Maybe it is more of a fractionated society now ... thr rich/poor, educated/uneducated, legal/illegal, subsidized/independent, ....

The middle class shrinks and there are more rules/regulations/laws directed, not at those commiting crimes, but at the general public.

I remember, as a kid, my cousin and I would take the old bolt action shotgun to the edge of town, then walk the rail lines and shoot birds, rabbit, snake, or any other little critter that made the mistake of catching our attention.

I doubt a kid could take a shotgun to the edge of town these days.

Yup it is a different community I live in these days. As to what is behind this shift ? I think it comes down to fear. Folks fear more things, for more reasons. More folks want to carry a gun and it is not a hobby as it once was. up a different community.
