I'm not a reloader, but am hoping to get a head start on choices of loads for bench rest out to 300 yds and whitetail hunting. Ideally i'm looking for one load that will do both well enough. Thanks.
For target Federal Gold Metal Match is the defacto factory accuracy load for most shooters. For hunting you need a different bullet for example the GameKing but there are so many choices for hunting ammo you simply need to by some you can afford and get out to the range and test.
all 168 bthp match i have shot has been excellent out of mine, also the 110 vmax hornady loads done very well, i have settled on reloads of 44 grns of varget w a 155 AMAX
I haven't, but one of my co-workers shoots it out of his VTR. It's less accurate than the 168 match, about on a par with the Remington Core-lock, but with better terminal performance.
Has anyone tried any Hornady factory match ammunition using the A-MAX bullet? The A-MAX is an excellent target and hunting bullet so if you want one load for both, it might be worth a look.
I don't buy factory ammunition generally, but I use Hornady A-MAX bullets for three rifles. My reloads are VERY accurate and I like the idea that I can use the same accurate loads for matches, classes or hunting.
Hornady's SST is a good choice for one bullet to both target shoot and hunt with. They are accurate and designed to perform well on game.
If you want to use one bullet for both I'd suggest selecting a capable hunting bullet with good accuracy as well, not the other way around. If you get super serious about competition you are going to wind up with match loads and hunting loads though.
A-MAX bullets are good match / defensive bullets but are very lightly constructed and will probably ruin a lot of meat.
