I am wanting to replace the old Remington 700 in 270 I had that was stolen in a home burglary a few years back( cdl I believe). Anyway I'm thinking 308 this time around since this will be my only bolt gun and it will serve as a range(some 500y shooting) and hunting rig. Most hunting will be whitetail, axis and hogs with the odd elk, black bear, and exotics tossed in. I would also like to start learning to shooting at longer ranges ( 600-1000 yard range @metal/paper, not animals). also I plan to start reloading for both 308 and 45acp and have heard 308 is great due to the wide variety available. Also don't want to spend much more than 700ish on the gun that way I can still afford some good glass. Oh and I want the threaded barrel so I can add a muzzle break or a can down the road.

Enough back story. I'm really down to two guns that I think fit the bill.
Remington 700 sps tactical AAC-sd $650ish
Or
Savage 10 fp-sr $600ish

I have owned several of each and my best Remington would not hold a candle to any of my Savages. Savages are just more accurate and trouble free. Remington makes a more attractive rifle IMHO but I take function over form anyday.

I just purchased the Remington 700 SPS Tactical 20" Barrel in .308 Winchester. I also looked at the Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD, but I decided on the aforementioned rifle because I am using it as a platform to build a sniper system. Just my opinion but go with the Remington, Savage is way too UGLY, lol.

I own the SPS AAC-SD in .308, it is one of the most accurate out f the box rifles I have ever bought. I like my Savages, my favorite Savage I own is my 110 30-06. I would choose the SPS over the 10fp, but that is my opinion only. Both are fine rifles, but the 700 has way more options that fit me. All of the parts I can buy to upgrade a 700 is the majority of my decision. Either way you should be happy. The main thing is to pick the one that is the best for you, and not what everyone tells you. Enjoy your choice and keep us upgraded.

have any pictures of it you could post? what scope are you using?

The first two photos are of the Savage, it has a 4-16x40 DOA Bushnell. this is the sope I judged both rifles on, the other photos are of the SPS Tactical and the new scope I put on it a Vortex Viper.

That is a 4-16, I have replaced it with a 6.5-20x50 Viper since those were taken.

I love the feel of the Hogue stock but hated the flex it had in it. So for $4-5 worth of materials I fixed it. Now I love it. I used a dremel and a sanding bit and sanded out the channels a little, to give extra clearance. Then used 30 minute hobby epoxy and lined in between the channel ribs with epoxy. It is between 1/4-1/2" thick in the cut outs of the stock. That took almost all of the flex out of it. It helped the grouping of the rifle ALOT. If you decide on the SPS and want to strengthen the stock, let me know. I can take some photos showing how I did it. It is easy and quick.

thanks.

im not really concerned with a few ounces. the hunting i normally do is from blinds that can be driven to or walked to in a reasonable amount of time.

hell my browning citori is no lightweight and i walk all day with it when upland hunting, doesn't bother me.

Either one will do what you want and it's really a toss up. On average, one isnt better than the other. Both companies make rifles that shoot and rifles that dont, both make rifles with mechanical problems/defects and rifles that dont. That's just the way mass manufacturing and quality control work these days. Things man made can, do and will break, quality can slip through the cracks, Remington and Savage are not immune to this....it happens.

I suggest to get your hands on the models that you are interested in and handle them, compare them side by side if you can. Both will most likely have some things you like and dislike between them. Feel the weight, the balance, the way the bolt cycles, fit and finish, the stock in general as well as the forearm stiffness, the Savage might have a free floated barrel while the Remington doesnt. What bullets are you planning on shooting relates to what barrel twist might suite your needs better will a 1:10 or 1:12 do better, does it even matter to me??......and on and on.

We are all different and have preferences, some like cream with their coffee and some dont. There are going to be Savage fan boys as well as Remington, Winchester etc etc. I have been shooting a long time and am blessed to have a good selection of firearms, more than a man should have. I get to run firearms side by side and compare apples to apples, that's where my opinion comes from. I have 5 different different 308 win rifles I shoot on a regular basis. Each one is it's own person if you know what I mean. One day a Remington might turn in the best results while Savage will on another outing. My personal Rem 700 308 shot exceptional out of the box with various loads while my Savage 10FP drove me crazy and took a looooong time to find a load that it liked. Is the Remington better than the Savage? My honest answer is no. They both perform and do what I ask of them.

It comes down to what you feel is best for you and your budget. Again, firearms in general can be a personal, please have an open mind and decide on what you think. If you have questions, do some homework, look at the gun companies web sites, get your hands on them etc.

Of course you could do what I did and get several makes of 308's and run em side by side and come to your actual "hands on" conclusion:D

anyone on here own the 10 fp-sr?

I do. I like it quite a bit. It shot great out of the box, but I did restock it. I'd buy one again in a heartbeat.

That said, there is a reason a lot of guys like 700s too.

I like my 700AACSD a lot. The trigger isn't as good as other 700's I've tried and I'm not sure why but other than that, it's a great rifle. I did sand down the front of the forend to free float the barrel but that took less than 5 minutes and the Hogue stock still looks untouched.

Have youlooked at FN's offerings? My PBR is mor accurate than I am .

7thGenAustinite, I voted other.

I was looking for the same basic features but after reviewing alot of info on Snipershide.com I decided to go with the Rem 700 Varmit on sale for $449.99 at Dick' Sporting Goods.

I you just want to pick up a rifle to shoot "as-is" the savage is incredibly hard to beat accuracy wise.

If, on the other hand, you want to upgrade components later the 700 is the one to go with.

I want to use the 700 to learn scope usages at extreme ranges then upgrade to a TRG if I become proficient enough to warrant such an outlay of cash. And I'm hoping to move up to a .300WM so just adding a different viewpoint.

Having had a rifle stolen have you invested in a safe yet? I'd do that before any purchases. Just hate hearing of people getting robbed! That happened to me years ago where I lost a cheap (junk) .22 and my hunting bows and I've been paranoid of getting robbed again ever since. Investing in a good safe has made leaving the house a whole lot easier!
