hi guys,

the subject line is the question:

what grips was a '74 s&w mod. 27-2 wearing when it came straight from the factory?

thanks,

mike

hi sheldrake,

i have one coming in tomorrow, 5", 1974, ser# 177xxx. is yours close to that?

hope you don't mind a couple of additional questions.

was the topstrap checkered? what kind of sight, trigger and hammer did yours have on it originally?

hell, just tell me about yours please. don't spare me the details, i'd love to hear 'em!

and how does it shoot???

thanks,

mike

Hi Mike,

Congratulations on your 27-2. You'll love the 27. I addition to the 5", I also have a 6" that was made a year earlier. Both are great shooters with lead or jacketed bullets.

Both of my 27s are blued and have grooved service triggers, checkered semi-target hammers, and checkered topstraps. The 5" has a plain ramped front sight whereas the 6" has a plain partridge front sight. Rear sights on both are adjustable with plain blades.

The target hammer, target trigger, red ramp front sight, and white outline rear sight blade did not become standard on the 27 until 1976 or thereabout.

For a relatively light, but extremely accurate load, I use 6.0 to 6.5g of Universal Clays with the 158g Oregon Trail Laser-Cast LSWC in a magnum case. Very clean burning load with no leading.

I look forward to hearing about your new 27.

Bob

I believe all 27's have the checkered topstrap regardless of vintage. My early 1970's 27 has the grips like P95 carrys but they are smooth. Were those possibly what the gun came with from the factory?

I'm reading this thread with a great deal of interest, I also have a Model 27-2 in 8 3/8 barrel length, checkered rib, partridge style front sight, S/N N21 51xx
I Have no idea when it was made or even its approximate value, I bought several S&Ws in an estate sale a few years ago, just cleaned them and put them in the safe.

xring44 - your 27-2 seems to be in the 1976 region. I have one similar.

In good condition that is very likely worth in the $450 region IMO.

Thanks, this gun is in really great shape, a little touch of blue gone at the muzzle, a faint drag line on the cylinder and although I have trouble seeing the sights, it shoots very well, I just couldn't bring myself to have it drilled and tapped for glass sights. I'm a O.F. you know!:)

S&W M-27

I was never smart enough to own a Model 27 in the years yours came in. I did find a beautiful nickled one later. The el-lessexpensivo version, of course, was the Highway Patrolman, or the Model 28. I bought every one I could afford. I had 2 four inchers and one long barrel. I well recall going to the store one bright morning in 1975, (gun store, that is), and my dad and I each bought a 4 inch bbl version M-28 for retail. $97.25. Brand new. They were plainer than the 27, but I recall the grips were the S&W target grips on both 27s and 28s in those years. Saw an M-28 at a gunshow last year which looked like it had been eaten by wolves and passed over a cliff and the price on it was $300.00.
