I understand Tom is a real gun guy. He is one of the producers for the Jesse Stone movies and the recent westerns he has done, so he gets to pick what he wants. For the westerns he had some nice period correct guns restored for the movie and then added them to his personal collection after the movie was completed.

I'm a huge Magnum PI fan. I have 3 seasons on DVD and asked for 2 for Christmas. His character's background is that he was a former SEAL and Navy Intelligence officer in Viet Nam. This would, of course, lead to his choosing and love of a Colt 1911 Government.

Whether or not the gun used was a 9mm Blank Gun or not, the "character" gun was a .45.

Absolutely love that show and love Tom Selleck.

Exactly. It was *supposed* to be a GI 1911. Whether or not it really was, and whether or not it was in .45 ACP or 9mm, I can't say.

I do know that many, if not most, .45 ACP auto's used in film/TV were actually 9mm's because it was much easier to get the guns to work with 9mm blanks then .45 ACP blanks. In the commentary on "The Way of Gun" DVD the director specifically mentions that the 1911's in that movie were 9mm's "standing in" for .45 ACP pistols.

As far as to whether Magnum's pistol is a 1911 or a Star Model B, I'd have to see a better screen shot of the gun to be sure. The Star Model B almost identical to a 1911, especially at a distance, and was often used in films and on TV instead of a 1911 because it was already chambered for 9mm. The Star used an external extractor and doesn't have a grip safety. If you can get a picture of those details on Magnum's gun you can tell what model it is.

In "The Wild Bunch" the character who is packing a 1911 and a Colt Peacemaker is actually carrying a Star Model B in 9mm. Another example is in "Pulp Fiction." Samuel L. Jackson's gun is actually a Star Model B instead of a 1911.

HAHAHA!!! Sharp eye Trebor! I too noticed a scene in "The Wild Bunch" where Bill Holden's character has a Star Model B....That extractor gives it away everytime! "The Way of the Gun" yep, I heard that too and one can see the 9mm mags during speed/tactical reload sequences....

The magazine in the opening credits of Magnum appears to be a 9mm. However the gun in the show is supposed to be a 45, that is made clear on many episodes. It is a 1911A1, a Colt I would expect since it is supposed to be one he carried in Viet Nam.

I've gone through 5 seasons of the Magnum PI dvd's and have not yet seen him use a Detonics. Perhaps he does in the upcoming seasons, although I don't recall him ever using one. He did use a Walther PPK in an ankle holster at least once.

In the Las Vegas TV show Selleck uses a S&W Gunsite 1911. The Gunsite grips have been replaced with stag however.

Other guns used by magnum:

M16
Uzi
MP5
Hunting rifle of some type (in the great episode where he goes to kill the North Viet guy but chooses to walk away and allow a POW swap instead)
Shotgun (several times...Higgins flying model airplane being one of the best examples)

And many others I'm sure...

As a long time Magnum PI fan..I have to say you guys are way to scary for me! :neener:
It wouldnt surprise me if it was a star B....looks the same and is just a blank away from a movie set.

Shoot well...........

Mike Hammer (Stacy Keach) had a Star or Llama 9mm in some scenes, if you looked closely.

In close up scenes where the gun isn't fired, many really are Colts.

Some guns are rubber props. I saw those nickled Webley .455's when they were sold off after, "The Lost World" was cancelled, and they were rubber. The real ones were used only in scenes where they'd be shot. They were not offered for sale. The light rubber guns were how Finn on that show was able to run around with a MK. VI .455 in her tight hot pants in one episode and not have the gun fall out. Anyone else here like that show?

I've been looking carefully at gun photos on DVD boxes, and some are evidently props or airsoft replicas. You can see differences from the real guns.

I was on the official fan board that New Line Cinema used to sponsor for the Lost World, and we were were told that actors usually didn't handle the real guns unless the scene called for it, and a studio armorer always had to be present to supervise. Actors and real guns don't always mix well. Most actors have very fuzzy firearms safety ideas...On that show, the real guns were handed to the actor only just before the director called, "Action!" and were retrieved as soon as the scene was shot.

Gun safety on most sets tightened up a lot after an actor named Jon Erik Hexum shot himself dead with a blank round, after putting the gun to his head. That was years ago, and security seems to have remained tight on most sets. Remember, most actors are flaming liberals, and are taught to hate guns, unless they're exploiting them for a role. Naturally, most don't know much about them. And many of these people are emotionally unstable and may use drugs. Some just don't have responsible ideas about personal responsibility and caution, either. Tom Selleck is an exception.

By the way, a new Jesse Stone DVD, "A Sea Change" will be released Feb. 26. I've read the book, and if they don't butcher it, it should be good. They left me cold when they cast a black woman as Molly in that series earlier, though.
PC is out of control in Hollywood.
