Mpayne,
Thanks I agree with you 100% after thinking about what I wrote more,
IT IS ALWAYS BEST TO AVOID AN ENGAGMENT
I stand by my advice of preplanning some routes that you could ditch them and to really vary your schedule
Dave,
If you are sure that there is no reason for them to be intersted in you, perhaps you should look into who owned you car before you or your house, this is most likely a case of mistaken identy

Firstly, sounds like a low-rent amateur operation.
They could have you mistaken for someone else, if they aren't professional enough to run a good survellience operation, I wouldn't put it past them  This could be bad, if they decide that you need to be questioned or confronted over something. Get a lawyer to call the PI firm and ask them what the hell they want. The other thing that might throw them off is to go straight to thier office, with the dumbazz following you all the way
:neener:
Don't confront the actual survelleince agents. They may be armed, and may be the types that think they can shoot first and ask questions later.
I agree with the fact that you're being stalked. Start photographing and documenting everytime you see them.
I don't trust PI's or Bounty Hunters as far as I can toss them. They tend to be unscrupulous, and won't hesitate to violate someone's rights to get what they want.

39-17-315. Stalking.

(a) (1) A person commits the offense of stalking who intentionally and repeatedly follows or harasses another person in such a manner as would cause that person to be in reasonable fear of being assaulted, suffering bodily injury or death.

(C) "Repeatedly" means on two (2) or more separate occasions.

(b) (1) Stalking is a Class A misdemeanor.

(2) A second or subsequent violation of subsection (a) occurring within seven (7) years of the prior conviction is a Class E felony. A second or subsequent violation of subsection (a) involving the same victim and occurring within seven (7) years of the prior conviction is a Class C felony.

(c) The provisions of this section shall not be construed to prohibit following another person during the course of a lawful business activity.

[Acts 1992, ch. 795, § 1; 1993, ch. 435, § 1; 1995, ch. 378, § 1.]

the stalking issue may be out the window because of the last line. If they have been lawfully hired to follow you and have the items need to do so in
TN then you can not say it was stalking. I could be wrong.......how does everyone else fell about it ?

by the way this info is from the State of Tn Codes.

Being surrounded by five of your buddies in five cars creates a force disparity. The PIs, right or wrong, feel that their lives are in danger, and either freak out and run someone over, or draw their weapons.

If you want to, don't confront him, just have your buddies block him for 10 minutes while you drive away. I'm sure he'll get extra points at work for situational awareness.

You can even do it while he is parked. Stop somewhere, and he'll stop to watch you. have some friends trap him in his parking spot.

I know everyone here prepares for the worst, but I am a little surprised by the amount of paranoia being displayed.

According to the poster, he is not a likely candidate for tailing. So, this is most likely a case of mistaken identity.

What is wrong with asking the guys what they are doing, and why?

Do you think they are likely to gun him down in the street?

If you are that worried, walk halfway to their car, and put a cell phone on the ground, back off and sign for them to pick it up.

Why aren't ANY of you trying to establish contact? Isn't this the only way to find out what is going on?

(actually Thefumegator and TarpleyG did suggest this, so the above emphasis is not quite correct)

TallPine,

actually, that is true. That is part of why I was wondering about all the concern. Being an "innocent" myself, once I found they were part of a PI operation, I'd quit worrying about them and start having fun with them.

But I would like to know if they thought I was dangerous or something, first.

If they are just being paid to tail you... have fun at their expense!

Dav,
I think the safest way would be to establish contact with the office itself. By confronting the agent on the street, the agent may feel threatened. After all, most of these guys are just cop-wannabes, right :p

Yes, I agree whole-heartedly.

That is what I suggest is the first order of business, now.

What can you lose by calling the office, now that their ID is known?

I've been reading this putting myself in your place to think what I'd do.
Are you sure you have no idea why anyone would do this? Life ( mine anyways) is made up of family, work, social, church, and recreational activities. In the areas of family there would be no reason for the surveillance unless the spouse had reason to enact it. Who else in the family would have an interest in your activities? Regarding work, depending on what it is you do, who would have reason to watch you off work and why? What interest would anyone there have with your time away from that location? Social could possibly involve the spouse of a friend/acquaintance who would want to know what you do. Recreation involves whatever you do for fun. Why would anyone have an interest in that? You are doing or have done something thay has really pissed someone off. (Worst case is you had a fling with a cousin's wife who works down the hall from you, goes to the same church and her kids are on the same ball team that you coach.) Think hard, sir.

Moderator Note

Hey folks, please remember that on The High Road, we don't discuss specific lawbreaking by specific people. If you want to suggest that this guy breaks the law, please do not use THR's bandwidth to do so.

Call the police on your cell phone. "I'm travelling on X highway, this person has been following me, this has been reported in the past, where would you like me to lead him so that you can apprehend him?" Worked for me...

Thanks to all of you for your comments. Here is a follow up.

First. let me thank the Mods for keeping this thread up. If it needs to be moved please feel free to do so. I know it's not quite gun related.

For the issue of paranoia/why am I a target? I've recently found out that this investigation may have something to do with my previous employement. No, I'm not on any workers comp, or insurance claims. I still don't know what it may be. A friend of mine that I spoke to tonight said that they was also followed by the same vehicles. this was confirmed when a group of us went to dinner in one vehicle (not mine) and the same two vehicles were pursuing. The common denominator to both of us is we used to work together. I seem to be the main focus of this. One therory maybe to see if I'm being fraudulent with unemployement. ( I just recently filed)

Mwithers,

Thank you for posting the code. I'm going to look at this further.

All,

I must say there have been some very creative/funny thiings to do while being surveiled. ( I use this term loosley- they're not very good at it) However funny it may seem some of them crossed the line of being unsafe at best and maybe illegal. This is the HighRoad after all. I'm trying to have my actions display this.

As I said before, I'm going to retain a lawyer and let him do the "confronting" for me. The last thing I want to do is spook these guys, and have them draw down on me. All be it if that would happen I'd have grounds to use what ever force necessary. But I would have caused there reactions to my action. I think the best thing for me to do is to gather as much stuff as I can and get it to the lawyer and let him procede on my behalf.

I'll be sure to post what happens next.

You might as well screw with your survellience team, just for entertainment purposes. :D
1) take public transportation
2) walk slowly through shopping areas
3) Enter public buildings. Exit through backdoors and see if you can sort of sneak up. Don't look at them, don't act like you know they are there. Stop within feet of thier car to light cigarette, tie shoes, thumb through wallet.
4) while driving, make incessant wandering turns through residential or downtown areas, with no apparent destination. Constant right turns.....maybe even a box pattern. (This, by the way, is a very effective counter-survellience maneuver. A real good team probably won't get busted....but criminals, local PD, bounty hunters, and PI's probably will be burned)
5) do things for no reason. get on and off the freeway. drive around parking garages. (back to number 4)
6) Send takeout to thier vehicle...but don't pay for it :neener:
7) go into a public building, like a mall. Exit through another entrance, catch the bus or a cab, and go home, and have a beer :D

I seriously, seriously doubt that this is an unemployment issue.
Was there a suspicious reason you were laid off?
If so it may be your former employer trying to get dirt on you so you can't go back at him for wrongful dismissal.

In any way, the easiest, most legal way to get them is this;

First you need two friends with cars and cell phones.

They need to know in advance where you are going. They need to be somewhere ahead of you waiting, along your route. You need a long route on easy access surface streets. Not too busy though. Just enough cars so you can see them but they don't see your friends.

Once you spot the tail and can identify the two cars have your guys start to follow them, once all of you have passed them.

Once they have their targets in sight call the police. Give them all of the information you can. Try to have them waiting somewhere along your route. Preferably in the middle of a block instead of an intersection.

The secret is to keep moving. If they're sitting still they have a better chance of spotting your tail or the police.

If the PI guys spot the police and they split off you have your people follow them giving locations to the police until the police can stop them.

Once you have the police stop them and get their information THEN have your lawyer start his voodoo. Use your atorney only after they have been "made" by the police.

If you tip your hand to the company to soon they might just hand it off to a different but more competent agency or they might change their tactics.
The last thing an investigator wants it to have his cover blown. When that happens usually the client doesn't pay. At least mine don't.

The easiest way to save your chickens is to outfox the foxes.

However funny it may seem some of them crossed the line of being unsafe at best and maybe illegal.

Roadblocking him is one thing...putting a .308 through his radiator is another :D

Bluestar,

Thanks for the tips. They were once made by the police but the police were unable to get them. that's when they changed their tactics(using another car.)

They haven't folloewed me today. But the day aint over I guess. I do like the friends following the tail bit. I've got some friends that offered to video tape them following me. But that wont take place untill this weekend. I'm hoping that the "investigation" is still going by then.

We'll have to see what happens next.

I don't know why everyone is so helbent against a confrontation. What are they gonna do, shoot him??? Come one! Most likely, if they see him coming, they will boogie.

If it were me, with my mindset and attitude, you can bet your arses I'd walk up and ask them what they wanted. They have no right to be following him. Paid or not, it is still stalking.

Just my 2 cents.

GT

Don't confront them. PIs have to eat, too.

True, but think of it in terms of warfare. The enemy soldier may not be evil, he's a man just like you, possibly with a wife and family, yet, he is still an enemy soldier.

He has you eat, and you have to have your privacy. It's obvious what is prefered.

I'd have a friend sneak over, enter the back way, dress like me, and trade cars with me. See how long it took for the PI's to get wise. At least if I couldn't change the situation I'd have SOME fun with it. But initially it would creep me out too.

I don't know why everyone is so helbent against a confrontation.
Because there are less risky ways to resolve this issue than to confront them.
