I'm sorry Marine............

I did not mean you. I do not understand your circumstances enough to say yea or nea on anything you do.

I just meant that, for me, I should have a good broadside shot because of the layout of the land. If I freeze up or I am slow on the giddy-up when I see it, it will me my fault. If I, and ony I, have a butt only shot I will have screwed up. I should have five or more seconds of the deer just standing there broadside, with his head looking at me 175 yards away. If I fail to shoot on time it will be my fault. Please do not construe anything I said as a slander or a "flamed job" in the chat world slang.

I wrote about driving through a farm field once in this forum. I discussed how I took up a sitting position, and fired. Camp David really got on my case for "hunting from a road". I used the words "farm road". To me a farm road is in a field. To David, it is a public road in farm country.

I also read in a Peterson's hunting about a "SHOULDER SHOT" that absolutely hammers them. If you miss high, you hit the spine, if you miss low you hit the heart/lung area. Perfect. Supposely there's enough arteries and nerves in the shoulder that it causes catastraphic overload the the 98% of the deer just drop in there tracks like in some of the videos. I'm going to try it next year. And meat loss is also minimal, because the shoulder only has about a 2 lbs. piece of flat meat.

The shoulder shot is excellent and I have been using it since I figured out that, as you say, it only shoots up some front leg meat. They really do drop like they are hit by a truck. Where I hunt, we have to remove a lot of does. I got four so far this year. The 9 year old just fell over. The first two fell over but kicked a little. The one that I had to shoot for the usual heart ran about 35 yards. Not bad, but not perfect. There are a lot of hiding places in 100 feet of woods to lay up and die in. I never cut up the front legs myself. Too much work in the little deer I see here. I used to aim for the heart lung area. This is fine if you can chase it. I can't run them down like I did when I was a kid.

No problem.

No problem man. I completely understand. No anger here. I'd go with a Fail-Safe or whatever you have used in the past, it's obviously working.

Cool on that shoulder shot, now I have second hand confirmation. I'm going to try it next season.

Good luck and Good Hunting.

you can save yourself some time in the kitchen if you use a potato gun.

:neener:

Do you use Barnes X bullets for that, or a frozen pop can? Potatoes are OK, but I prefer the higher sectional density of the pop can. :neener:

A friend of mine blew a hole through bolth sides of his barn with a frozen pop can when we were younger.

in all seriousness, your 25-06 is just fine. Happy hunting!
