I have plenty of FMJ ammo I can take out to the range to have fun with, but when It comes time to go home and get my baby ready in case of the event of a break in, I want to have her loaded with some real nice Hollow Point Ammo. What are some GOOD brands for this? I only need 20 bullets to fill both my clips, so I can stand to buy 20 rnds of some real nice HP ammo. What grain should I get? 165? Is "40 S&W Federal LE Tactical EFMJ" any good? Or what about "40 S&W Hornady LE Close Quarters (CQ)"

thanks in advanced

i suggest you better buy at least 200 rounds of what ever hollow point ammo you will buy at the end.

set 20 aside and take the other 180 to the range and shoot them.

if you go from regular or weak loaded FMJ of the lighter range of bullet weights to a full power service grade cartridge with a heavy JHP, Point of impact will change, Recoil will feel diffrent and noone can guarantee it will feed reliable.

that beeing said, Hornady ammo is good and valued high, even here in europe.

You may get some difference of opinion about which bullet weight to use, depending upon the personal preference of who is making the suggestion. Some prefer light weight bullets at higher velocities versus higher weight bullets at lower velocities. Generally, speaking the higher weight bullets tend to penetrate more, which can cause more tissue damage and have a greater chance to destroy vital areas, thereby increasing the chance to stop the threat.

Many people like the XTP bullets, the golden sabre bullets and hydra-shok bullets.

Limiting your purchase to only 20 rounds means you do not plan to buy more to practice with and determine both where they shoot and whether they function reliably in your gun. This is not wise.

Your misuse of the term clip in a pet peeve of mine. A clip is used to hold ammunition outside the weapon and used to load that ammo into the weapon, but the weapon cannot function/fire with the clip attached to the gun. You mean magazine. A magazine holds ammo, is inserted into or attached to the gun and the gun can function/shoot with the magazine in place.

+1 for some more training for the O.P.

For range sessions, I'll shoot Win. WHite Box (WWB) in FMJ
or JHp, but the last magazine or two will be my carry ammo.
I keep stocked with Double Tap 9mmx19 ( 9mm luger) and .45
ACP and for the same bullet weight it is 100+ FPS faster
so a bit different point of impact.

Which Hollopoint?

Any of the top of the line bullets by the major
manufactuerers are excellent.
Federal HST
Speer Gold DOt
Remington Golden Saber
Hornady XTP
WInchester SXT or Ranger T

Find the one your gun will function with reliably
and you shoot best, 200 rds, and keep 100 rds
in stock

I've found buying via Double Tap in the 50 rd boxes
it's cheaper per round with the same Gold Dot JHPs than
buying SPeer's 20 rd boxes of same.

I like the WWB JHPs myself. Affordable, so I can afford to practice with them.

I'm fond of the Federal HST. Pictures of the expanded bullets send shivers down my back and they function flawlessly in both my SD/HD weapons.

Any of the JHP ammo from the major manufacturers will be good and there's not a lot of difference between them but there is a lot of difference between the effectiveness of JHP's and FMJ's. Cabela's is currently selling 50 rnd boxes of 165gr Hi-shock Federal .40 S&W police surplus ammo at a reasonable price (under $20) and there are other places you can buy it but as with all surplus ammo, when its gone future prices won't be discounted though you can still get it from Federal.

Personally I like Winchester police SXT ranger, Remington Golden Sabers, Federal Hydra Shok and HST but I'm also fine with any of the offerings in Hornady XTP's or CCI Gold Dots. I generally prefer to select my ammo on the way its performed over time rather than how nasty a bullet it appears to have or marketing hype. Police ammo has been field tested with more documented results than any of the newer stuff on the market.

If you can't afford the 100+ rounds as suggested, at least find a JHP that is the same bullet weight of whatever you do practice with and put at least a couple of mags of the HD ammo through your gun to make sure they function.

If not I would just stick with what you are used to shooting. Any FMJ that funtions in your gun is better than the best JHP if it hangs on the feeding ramp and won't go into battery.

Penetration comes first in bullet choice, followed by expansion. Here's an article that goes VERY much into detail.

Forgive the cheesiness.

Using this information, looking for a minimum of 12 inches penetration, you might use this to referance several popular makes and variety of .40 cal ammo with test data.

http://www.firearmstactical.com/ammo_data/ammodata.htm

Just click on the .40 S&W link and scroll down. I would have linked directly to the .40 cal page, but you could also use this for any other handguns (or anyone else interested).

I don't own a .40, haven't even shot one. But the Hornady and Remington Gold Saber rounds look to perform well, they seem to accross the board. I use both of these in my 9mm and .45

Hope this sheds some light
