What if I see a gun that was stolen from me?

As others have stated contact the police if you locate a gun that has been stolen from you.

I know in my area quite a few stolen guns are being recovered by local LEO's on the street. Not so much through the pawn shops or gun shops.

Pawn shops where I live have to report any thing they take in to the LEA's in the area and some even enter the information online. A local shop has a rifle that they have to hold on to for a minimum time period to see if it comes back stolen after they reported it. Once the wait is over I am going to pick it up if they still have it.

The police officers of the local PD and the sheriff deputies in my county will run any firearm they come across to their support staff who then runs it through their local system and the national database Lemay and others referenced (NCIC).

As JMR stated having a serial number documented is very important. I have seen numerous false hits in NCIC because the wrong number was entered, usually a model number or sku that looks like it could be a serial number.
