What is a Nitron finish?

Just picked up a used Sig p229 in .357 sig. It looks like its seen some hard use, and the condition/finish of the slide looks similar to AK battlefield pickups

However, other than that splotch on the grip, the finish on the frame and internals look pristine, leading me to believe that its probably holster wear

Now, I wanted to know: what is a nitron finish, and how is it different from bluing? What is your opinion on how to refinish the slide? Hard Chrome? Bluing? I'm pretty sure it wont rust in the white/as is either though, but just to be safe.....

Nitron is SIG's proprietary name for the finish they apply to their stainless slides...so it is whatever they say it is (there have been at least 3 different versions that I am aware of)

I would recommend you contact CCR (very active on the Sigforum) and see what they recommend for your intended use. Their House Black is very nice as is their Cera-Plate (electroless nickle)

Fives years ago or so it was said to be:

Nitron = TUNGSTEN DIAMOND LIKE CARBON or W DLC, a Physical Vapor Deposition Coating applied by IONBOND

my 2006/2007 SiG P225 (refinished by SiGARMS but sent to IONBond) and SiGARMS GSR Revolution STX slide are this way...I do not know if they still use IONBond but have heard many say they do...

Nitron has a specific meaning in chemistry, but who knows if SIG is aware.

Could it be sent to SIG for a new coat of Nitron, or is that not an option?

@bobson Dunno, any idea on the sig warranty? I'm not the original owner, nor was the person who sold it to the store

@johnBT Thanks for the ionbond suggestion, I guess I'll send it to them if Sig doesn't do a free refinishing/warranty is bust, do you know the turnaround time for Springer Precision?
