I don't have a big brand preference, but I do have a type preference. My favorite revolver is the Ruger Blackhawk. I could live with an SSM for self defense if I HAD to, but I just like Blackhawks, like carrying 'em afield, like shooting 'em, like reloading for 'em, and love the POWER I can get out of 'em. I have owned a variety of DAs and can't say I had one I didn't like, but hand over fist, the blackhawk is my favorite revolver.
S&W. I have three. I can't imagine buying another brand for pure self-defense; maybe a Colt SAA for collecting or something. Second place is Ruger, such as the GP100, Blackhawk or Single Six .22.
Pre-agreement, pre-lock, blued S&Ws. I've got a safe full of them, including a couple of Model 29s.
I've got ONE stainless steel firearm, a 3" Smith Model 65. I don't like stainless, but I absolutely could not find a Model 13 anywhere in the Cleveland/Akron/Canton area. So I settled for a 65 when CDNN had them for $299. It was a great deal.
Since S&W have gone nuts with internal locks and have somewhat dropped in quality compared to their older models, I'm going to have to go with Ruger. Their new stuff has been top notch, and I'm backing them 100% with all my new revolver purchases. If I see older pre-lock Smiths in pawn shops or for sale by private sellers I snatch them up but for anything new it's always Ruger.
Well, it depends. My favorite revolver is my S&W 625.
I also love my Ruger Security-Six. I don't own one, but the Colt Python was one of the best revolvers ever made. Certainly the best double action trigger of all.
