What is it with duck hunters?

Is it me, or are a lot of duck hunters absolutely obessive about their sport? I have a hunting buddy that has gotten into duck hunting and it is all he talks about. It is like he is possessed. He looks down on dove hunters and thinks upland bird hunting is beneath him. All his duck buddies are just like him. It is like they joined a wierd cult and are in need of a rescue.

They want me to go. But, if I am going to end up like them, I am not sure I want to become that imbalanced.
 
I'm happy to be beneath him, but it does look like the bee's knees.

Go have a blast. Don't worry about what other's think.

Just eat what you kill! I don't like the duck I've eaten.
 
Duck hunters (for that matter, dove and quail) hunters are all misguided slobs affecting a snob attitude.

While I will lower myself to pheasant - the true art of hunting is only seen in the pursuit of Ruffed Grouse, taken only on the wing - never while treed.

Those of you who disagree, well I only hope you see the error of your ways soon and come into the light.

Well I grab the grouse by the wing after I shoot it on the ground. Does this count :neener:

Actually, whenever I tried to take pheasant "on the wing", the danged thangs just hit the ground running. I didn't think it was very humane, knowing they would just die later. I think head shots are a lot more true "sportman like". :neener:
 
I like to shoot~ALOT!!, therefore dove hunting, quail hunting, and duck hunting are very fun. to me.Dove hunting in OK is hot as a firecracker, quail hunting can (and has) happened in temp extremes at both ends of the thermo. So does duck huntin, except it is an awfully long season, and there happens to be a goose season inside of the front end of duck season around here. Duck/goose hunting gets to be/IS the most expensive hunting sport for me, equiptment wise. Extrema or Gold 10(for the geeses), dekes- $10 per is cheep!, tags/stamps (I'm exempt :p ) and lunch on the road all contribute to a expensive hobby. Dogs are pets- so they don't count. It is a blast if you have someone who can call, just don't practice in the yard where the neighbors can hear you.
 
Ducks and geese get in your blood. I am hopelessly hooked on hunting them.

I still hunt pheasants and grouse, but ducks and geese are where it is really at for me. I even prefer ducks over deer hunting. Elk hunting is still my holy grail, but that is because get to hunt in God's country when after elk.

Don't start hunting ducks, you might get hooked and there is no cure.......

I've taken quite a few out guys out for their first duck hunt and every single one of them has wanted to do it again ASAP.
 
I grew up hunting ducks and geese off of the Portage river in Ohio.

Unfortunately, I am in an area where water is limited and so are the ducks.

Even if I was back in Ohio I would be hunting ducks, geese and pheasant.

For that matter, I love hunting all birds. It's in the blood. :D
 
Doesn't anyone like to hunt pigeons? Chased out of the top window of the barn, it is better than skeet -- and makes a much better stew. :D They are also hard to hit and fly in all directions at once - or maybe my trifocals need cleaning?
 
I'll bite; can you really eat pigions? Maybe I should rephrase my question. Are they really good eat'n.
 
Tuna, I guess you know I was only razzing you a bit? :) Actually, I've never been anywhere that grouse were - unless you count Blue Grouse - and you can kill them with a rock. No use to waste a shotgun shell. We also called them fool hens. They'd walk along right in front of you, like they thought they were invisable.
 
Hmmph. Here my front porch is full of blue quail and white-wing doves,right now, and a Dedicated Ducker would have me ignore them? Wrong...

But I wait til they're a hundred yards off. Not righteous to shoot house pets.

There's something about ducks zooming through the dead trees of a beaver swamp when it's not quite light enough to see them good. Like trying to shoot down small jets with your shotgun.

I don't have the fever but I can see how it's contagious. I've got a cousin that has a duffle bag full of calls. The way he sounds it's a wonder somebody hasn't tried to bag him. Anytime he asks me, I'm ready. But then I'm ready for hunting just about anytime except high summer.
 
Fisherman66. Fancy eating spots (where they expect a coat and tie) have "squab" on the menu. Nothing more than a young pigeon. Lots of people breed pigeons for meat. I wouldn't eat the city variety that poop all over the minuments, but the ones in the farm country are very tasty.
 
Are they breasted like dove? (I've heard dove are a type of; or related to pigeon.)

I wonder if the "sub-urban" pigeons are suitable for the grill (with a pepper and some bacon wrap.........mmmmmmmmmm). Lots around here. The guy across the alley has 10 (I'm not exaggerating) bird feeders.
 
If you aren't obsessed about duck hunting, you haven't been duck hunting. Plus, it is one of the better workouts you can get, walking through knee deep much with water to your chest.

The first time you are dive bombed by Teal, and miss them all, you'll be hooked.

Only 16 days to go!
 
I still love sitting in the dove field or following the dogs for quail, but ducks are my favorite by far. You don't get to watch doves circle over decoys and have the satisfaction of caling them in. Quail and pheasant are right up there though, because a bad day of quail hunting is still usually a great walk behind some nice dogs.
 
Walk? We ride. The hardest part is breaking up the ice around the boat and getting the motor started in the dark. :) Okay, and pulling the boat up in the marsh grass without stepping in a hole and sinking out of sight. There's nothing like changing clothes on a little island in a sleet storm.
