He's just trying to raise national awareness of his problem in NYC and trying to transfer the reasoning to something other than the incompetence of NYC to deal with it. Just pulling fast one that make me furious

True. If something like what he 'wants' gets passed, he will be up the creek minus his paddle when crimes utilizing guns gets worse. Underneath it all, he wants to keep the cover.

First he is a billionaire, hates firearms(only his shrink knows why), has visions of being a dictator, knows what is best for the common folk, loves publicity. Now if you're like me, not a billionaire, likes firearms, votes for whom I think will represent me, doesn't like to call attention to myself well I'm a gun nut/kook/killer and should be locked away, him being a billionaire politician is only slightly eccentric.

What does Bloomberg want? What does he expect at the Federal level?

1. Repeal the 2nd Amendment.

2. If not 1, reelect Obama and appoint a SCOTUS majority favorable to a collective right interpretation of 2A.

3. Then, follow NYC's example and enact the NYC firearms laws nationally. And if #2 not accomplished, dare the SCOTUS to declare it unconstitutional.

Realistic? Bloomberg and the usual useful idiots who agree with him think it is.

True, but then I didn't say I thought it was realistic.

Bloomberg seems to think that NYC is a separate country, has made statements to that effect, and seems to run the city as if it were. If he can't get the 2A repealed (and he can't anytime soon), he will do everything he can to nullify it, and that only requires a favorable SCOTUS.
