What is the best combat handgun in use today?

Any FNP

IMO - the most underrated gun on the market today is the FNP series from Fabrique Nationale. This gun is extremely reliable and as accurate as a target pistol. Add high capacity and ease of field stripping and you've got a winner on every front. If I was a soldier in Iraq or a cop on the street it's what I would want in my holster.

Any of the following, after running 500 rds through without malfs to insure reliability: (in aphabetical order) Colt 1911, Glock 21, HK USP .45, SIG 220, S&W 24/21/25/29/57/25. Any big bore handgun that suits the shooter, and can deliver 6 or more reliable shots to the target. Nice to be able to reload quickly, but as someone else stated, if you are down to your handgun, it gets you to your rifle, or someone elses........

Glock 17 for 9mm or Glock 22 for .40S&W.

As much as I like the 1911, it's just too heavy and has too little a magazine capacity.

I'm a dyed in the wool 1911 guy but i would have to say the SIG SAUER P series is the finest combat pistol in the world period. They are the most accurate most reliable pistols ever built. now i know people will jump me for saying that but lets clearify it a little. the Glock is reliable yes the SIG is reliable, the glock will do ok in the accuracy department. the SIG will shine above it as it will above most any custom pistol. the Glock and the SIG are by far the 2 most combat effective pistols ever built but the SIG is for a more disscrimanating class of gun owner. just put in these terms the Glock is a Ford and the SIG is a Mercedes.
But then again the most effective thing in combat is the person behind it, the pistol aint worth a damn if there isnt someone who can operate it to its potential.

A combat handgun should be able to function when filthy. 1911s are great when clean but it doesn't take much dirt to make them jam.

I carried an M1911A1 as a Mechanized Rifle Company commander on my second tour in Viet Nam. Mech Infantry travels in a constant cloud of dust, and everything gets filthy. My M1911A1 always functioned.

How to choose a pistol for combat.

A few easy steps.

ONE: Is it available?

Two: Can you procure ammunition?

THREE: Can you operate the handgun?

FOUR: Learn to use it well.

Everything else is gravy. The "best" for any individual is dependent on hand size and shape, recoil tolerance and to a certain extent, perception. Any handgun that is reliable and chambered in a caliber of 9mm or larger will suffice. All this talk about "best". Kinda like asking what brand of tennis shoes are "best".

The question, as written, has no answer.

Police are typically not in combat situations. So throw your police references out of the window. Second, a pistol would be a secondary weapon at best.

Once you get past all of this the pistol of choice as a secondary weapon would depend on the mission. Once you've defined the mission you might get a valid answer.

I can't believe this thread is this old. I thought I cleared it up for you all over a year ago. The Glock 21 is the answer. I did see that JShirley complained about not being able to handle the grip size and I remembered that we have to make allowances for the ladies. Sorry JShirley. Anyways check out the Glock 21SF it might work out a little better for you. And yes the 45 IS KING. King of the combat pistols. A rifle would be better, but we are talking about pistols. Oh and yes I too love the 1911's.

I was at a conference in Iraq after the invasion and the discussion was focused on after action items that could be improved on. Many of the Bde Cdrs were talking synchronization, intel availability, how to use supporting fires etc.. Interestingly enough one of the Marine O6's commented on how useless handguns were in combat on his list. That pretty much says it all.

The handgun is not a basic combat weapon, it is a personal defensive weapon. Since it gets used so infrequently my criterion would be caliber standardization, ease of training, safety (soldiers tend to accidentally shoot one another with pistols), reliability, ease of maintenance, price and weight. I like Glocks but believe they are not the best solution here due to the lack of a manual safety; I would say the XD or M&P variants with manual safeties.

When I was deployed I carried a 1911 and would do so again if given a choice.

The premise of the question is flawed. What is the best combat handgun?

I will ask a few questions before I answer the question at hand. How many of you have been deployed to a Real Combat Zone and USED a pistol? Cops don't count because they are generally not combat veterans and cops don't use their weapons very often. What percentage of actually combat troops actually carry a pistol? How many rounds do you think the average combat soldier carries into combat?

Now I will answer my own questions so you know the REAL answers. Few people who have deployed to a combat zone and of those the guys who actually leave the wire are even fewer. In Iraq as of a month and a half ago, when I was there, there were around 25000 troops on my base and about 900 left the wire, of those 900 about one eighth of them had a pistol. Most of them did not Really know how to use them. The round count for pistol was about 30 tops.

So now lets reevaluate the question. The best combat pistol with proven track history is as follows; 1911, High Power, Sig 228, Sig 226, CZ 75, M9, and various other soviet pistols. I carried a M9 in Iraq and did not use it. However, I used my M4 and 240B. Those of you how have not been in combat should know that a pistol is to get you to your rifle.

Now a few things in my experience. Those of you who think you don't have to clean your weapons are morons. The sand and debris of the sand box get into everything and I mean everything. So not cleaning your weapon means you are lazy and think lowly of your men's life and your own. If any of you have left your plastic framed whatever in your truck on a hot day and tried to handle it you know its too fricken hot. Even our M4s got too hot to hold sometimes. So when selecting a Combat Pistol you get what is issued in most cases. However, if you do have the choice get what you want. Just remember its one more item for accountability and its more weight on your load.

If I had my choice to carry anything in Iraq I would have carried my 1911 or my Sig 226.

Twice, during my first tour in Viet Nam. The pistol in question was a privately-owned Colt M357 with handloads.

During my second tour as a Mech Infantry company commander, I carried an M1911A1, but never had occasion to use it (although I did use other weapons, including an M14 sniper rifle.)
