What is the best round for up to 800 yd shooting?

Optics? How about iron-sights? ;-)

i knew the second i put that up somebody would hammer me about irons... truth is, the average shooter is going to immediately go to a scope. my comment was more aimed at steering a potential long range shooter away from a poor scope w/ non-repeatable turrets and an inability to even see the target than it was designed to be the end-all-discussion answer.

of course, lots of guys do the 1000 yard thing w/ irons. however, as i am not one of them, i sure couldn't speak to appropriate gear. i do shoot w/ optics at and beyond 1000 quite often, and have learned a thing or two there...

I would lean towards the .30-06 for 800yd shooting, the .300WM and 7mm Mag. are other good choices (but with added ammo cost). With good handloads the .30-06 I think the old '06 is better for your range. If you want to reach out to 1000yds, the .300WM/7mmMag. is the way to go.

Oh, you wanted the best...well...the best (at about any range) would be the 14.5mm Russian...anything better will be classified as a cannon. :)

Yeah, I want to get a tactical rifle with 1000yd accuracy, but obviously i would like moderate recoil and not have to pay an arm and a leg for ammo. I already reload and I know the 308 is very versitile and not as costly as the bigger rounds. I think the 308 is a great choice.

Rather than ask "What is the best round for up to 800 yd shooting" (there is no one best round), you would be better informed to ask for what type of rifle setup will best serve your purpose.

You would be better informed to have chosen a round instead of split hairs and tell me what to post. There is a best round for every individual. Everybody has their own opinion, other people feel a 338 Lapua, some chose a 50 bmg. Its all personal preference and thats why I asked the question. I feel the 308 is best. Obiously there are a lot of factors in the question. Recoil, money, and accuracy are mine. I feel the bigger rounds tend to take a more experienced shooter and larger bank account than mine.

Ah, I see, not actually looking for the actual best round, just doing a little mental masturbation.:D

Actually I WAS looking for everybodys opinion on the best round. Interesting though you bring the topic of masturbation into a Gun forum. Wonder what you do in your spare time. Moderator....its time end this one.

It means your asking a pointless philosophical question that has no answer. End it if you like, it is a trivial argument, with very little real value to start with. The original question was flawed as no restrictions or constraints were provided.

1+. My personal favorite for less than 1k is the 6mmBR(X), for longer, something like a .260 rem. Others swear by the .308, others magnum calibers.

Then why are you posting in it?

Best is somewhat subjective because a vague inquiry can result in the people answering the question bringing their own needs/values to the plate. I can tell you that in practical LR competitions in the Rockies, .260 Remington (and substantially similar 6.5mm cartridges) and 7mm RM/WSM have been dominating for the last four years.

.308 would be the best to me. You have a ton of load selections and a ton of different types of guns to choose from and shoot in it.

.308 is at a handicap compared to the cartridges that are popular for practical long-range shooting. At the 08 and 09 Steel Safari, the high .308 was in 7th place both years. They had 75-83% of the score of the winner, who was shooting a 6.5mm or 7mm cartridge. This tells me that a .308 shooter with a great rifle and shooting at the top of his game is still at a significant disadvantage compared to a comparably-skilled shooter using .260/6.5-06/etc or 7mm RM/WSM/etc.

I used to would have said .308...I have long been a fan of the .308 with a box of Federal
Gold Medal Match in 168 gr. Out to 800 yds, even with good optics, you're kinda "pushin' the envelope"..real hard.( I still love it, though.)
Today, some of the new 6.5's are really making noise at 1000 yds, and I believe we could see a trend coming ...even stronger than it already is.
